October 16 I Have Left the Building!...For NowYeap, it's offical, I'm on hiatus...
This site has been around for nearly 3 years, and it'll always have a special place in my heart. I discovered my love for reviewing, I enjoyed expressing myself and I've had some lovely comments from friends & random strangers alike. But after a while I realise that MSN Spaces no longer caters for my needs; it's slow, has word limitations, you cannot ban rude people who spam/threaten you, and well...there's just simply better alternatives.
However; since this space means much to me, I've decided to keep it and I hope to return one day. Whether I'll be back on form or just to randomly post thoughts. I also plan to re-publish my old reviews to improve on them (mostly spelling mistakes!) in the near future.
If you wish to continue to read my thoughts, reviews and anything I have to say; please go to my livejournal; www.lilithdarkstorm.livejournal.com
In the mean time feel free to browse through my old entries, I hope you find something useful, you can also check out my other links on the left hand side under the profile photo.
I won't be checking this site as much so any comments you do post I appreciate but probably won't get back to you straight away. I'm also not adding anymore friends so don't bother asking - sorry!
Anyways; as the say in all references to "The Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy".

June 09 Just a Quickie!Just so you're warned, this is going to be a small entry. Let's get to it shall we?
Life Update
May has been quite a productive month for me; from my car to my home I’ve done quite a lot. Wanna see? 1) My cleared up my crappy room! Well it’s no longer crappy! I have so much dust, junk, paper work and talcum powder around the room it isn’t funny. I’m bad at throwing finance paper away as I always think; “Oh, what if I need to keep it?” So they tend to pile up until they eat away at my bedroom floor. I’m terrible at dusting; I also use talcum powder to dry myself (which gets EVERYWHERE! Seriously. It’s deadly stuff). So yeah my room was a tip, but with mum we did a major clear up! No more dust/talcum powder, less crap, I now have a small flat screen TV in my room with a mini bookcase underneath to hold my DVDs. I haven’t cleared my financial documents yet but that’s the next step I plan to take in a few weeks. 2) I’ve now got a savings account! Nothing major but now I feel like I’m doing an adult thing and savings some of my hard earned cash instead of just spending it. 3) My right indicator bulb in my car had been off for weeks, since the beginning of April to be precise. I FINALLY got a new bulb about mid-May; I am now safe on the road again! Yay! Now all I need is diesel, which thankfully is cheap…wait a minute…doh!
Almost immediately after I posted my last entry; I saw Katy! We went to the ICA College in London on 28th April to see the Japanese film; Death Note, based upon the manga of the same name. I finished the manga recently (see my LJ entry on my thoughts on the entry). Basically I loved it! The whole manga is a masterpiece! The film was highly enjoyable, didn’t quite capture the essence of what makes Death Note so addicting but was very well done. The ICA College plan to show the 2nd Death Note film in the summer, I’m sure Katy and I will be among the first to purchase a ticket! I had a good evening with her, not just because of the film and company but it was the first time I’ve stayed out so late since my salmonella poisoning. I didn’t get home till midnight which for me is a big deal!
Andy came back for 4 days on 14th May. I saw him after work on Friday evening; we had the house to ourselves so it was nice just to be catch up in our own little space. The following day I had several chores to complete so we didn’t meet up until 2pm, again though we had the house to ourselves for several hours. It was probably the first time in ages that Andy and I were alone in my room let alone in my house! It also gave me the chance to show off our new furniture and have a laugh without interruptions from mum and Daniel (no offence to them!). Later on I picked Daniel up from Brian’s house and had to make dinner for the family (as mum was in London the entire day). I cooked 3 meals and 2 of them turned out ok! Daniel had spaghetti hoops and meatballs (not taxing but he seemed happy), Mum had lamb chops with chips and hoops (this one went a bit pear shaped, just the lamb really as it wasn’t cooked all the way through even though I grilled it at least 10 minutes longer than the suggested time on the pack) she ate what she could and I was a bit disappointed but now I know to put it in the oven! And last but not least, Chicken in white wine sauce with chips and vegetables (this most successful, as I didn’t poison anybody!). He went back on the Sunday but 2 weeks later he came back for more! I saw him Saturday evening for dinner, we drove to Bluewater and had TGI’s (which, to me, has gone downhill. The menu used to be massive, now it’s all Jack Daniels’ this and Jack Daniels that). We then drove back home for some private time (fun all round!). The following day he came round for dinner, I wasn’t feeling my best that day but we still had laughs nether-the-less. We also had another catch up 2 weeks later; we went out to dinner at Bluewater on Saturday evening, which made a nice change since we usually stay in doors or stick around the Sidcup area but since all the stabbings, oddly enough, Sidcup isn’t as appealing as it used to be. The following day Andy came round for dinner again (yes, we are trying to fatten him up! Hmm!), so not much went on apart from good food and company. Then on Thursday I went round his house after work; something I haven’t done in a while considering that previously I was too tired to do anything else after a long day at work. We had a laugh, a nice dinner, and although I didn’t stick around for too long, it was enough to keep us smiling until he returns for good on 18th June!
My next visit was from George, a friend I hadn’t seen since Daniel’s 16th birthday party – which then I wasn’t feeling 100% at and of course my attention was divided. He’s been going through a bad patch lately (I won’t go into detail ‘cos it’s not mine to go into) and lately all I’ve been able to do is e-mail and/or chat to him via MSN, which itself can only do so much. So he drove to Bexleyheath on Saturday 7th June and we went out for lunch at Noodle Time. We mainly chatted about our recent events and past memories. We also walked a bit since George hadn’t properly seen the Broadway (Bexleyheath shopping centre) since he moved and was amazed how much it changed. For me only a few bits and bobs have improved but I live there so all changes become a blur in the end. He had to leave by 4pm but before then we drove around his old neighbourhood in his car (he still drives like a boy racer who just got his first pair of wheels!) and he had a go on my Wii (which he looked like he enjoyed). I also lent him some manga; hoping to get him into the Chobits and Death Note addiction!
I haven’t spoken about work in a while; mainly because not much has happened. However May and June proved to be very busy months. It started off as bad but gradually turned into something much greater. As you may know, I was promoted recently; before Christmas I was told that my new title would be “Scheduling and Promotions Assistant” – which meant that I would still perform my regular office-based duties but I would also make promos across all kids programmes. I was told that I would receive training in Avid Media Composer and would move over to the production side of television; an area I haven’t been in since I was a freelancer for GMTV2 a year and a half ago. I was looking forward to this new challenge as I missed working in production and to be honest, my weekly duties in my role are not enough to fill up my whole week. If I did all my jobs back to back with no breaks from Monday morning, by Tuesday afternoon I would have nothing else to do for the rest for the week. So working in promotions was a welcome change. After 2 months of silence, in March an e-mail was sent around to everyone to confirm this, as well as other people’s promotions in my department, including other people told they would be making promos as well. I wasn’t fazed much as I thought we would all muck in and learn off each other. Approaching the end of April; I noticed that other colleague’s new jobs were taken affect – but not mine. I hadn’t been told yet when I was getting training and when I would be making promos. In addition; over hearing conversations I heard that I might not be making them after all! Just researching for them! I had enough by then so I decided to talk to my boss, who’s a good friend of mine, to ask the head of department what was going on. Mark (my boss) agreed that it’s about time I was told of the situation. Then on Wednesday 14th May, Mark told me of the result of his chat with the head of the Kids department (also named Mark); basically I was told that I would not be getting any avid training. I would have to learn via other people, such as watching them and asking questions. The same was for promos; I had to learn to make them on my own.
So even though my colleagues have had the advantage of training and told how to make a promo, I’ll have to make do with none of the above. As you can guess, I was not happy about the result; it didn’t seem fair that everyone else had found their feet in their new roles yet I was being left behind to fend for myself. Most of my colleague had 3 days to 1 week’s worth of avid training and yet they expected me to learn it myself from watching others use it. Like learning Japanese by simply listening to someone else speaking it. I’m not stupid, I do pick things up quickly but I felt it was out of order. I was promised something that wasn’t given to me. Can you imagine how horrible it feels to watch your colleagues moving forward and achieving their goals when you’re stuck in the same place? What’s worse is that if I hadn’t asked when I did, how much longer would I have to wait to find out that information? As a result; I did some research on the internet and decided to book a training course for myself. Knowing that GMTV would not pay for it, I was willing to fork out over £500 for a 2 day course over a weekend. As I was getting ready to pay, mum suggested I talk with my father, Brian, who works high up in GMTV. I was reluctant as A) we don’t have a good relationship and B) I didn’t want to come across as a stroppy teenager who went crying to her father every time she didn’t get what she wanted. However; it gave me the idea to chat to another colleague, Amy. She’s a friend of mine who’s worked with me since I started GMTV so I decided to ask her opinion. So over a cup of tea/coffee; I asked her if it was worth paying for a training course outside of work and her thoughts on how I should progress forward. In a turn of events; she agreed to train me! It was a lovely surprise; I wasn’t expecting it as I presumed that all those who use Avid Composer would be too busy to train me. We wasted no time as that same afternoon I was sitting at her desk learning the basics! The lesson continued to the next day with pages of notes to reference from! We started to build 2 promos, a template to compile a cartoon and I also helped finish her other promos by selecting sound effects with the editor. Those 2 days really outshone the gloom that Wednesday had brought.
On my second day of training, I wrote a script for a promo concerning an up and coming new Action Stations schedule for the weekends on ITV4. I handed my script to Amy who said it was good and would forward it to the Deputy Head of the Kids department, Becky (who mucks in a lot with the Production Side of things). She gave me the A-OK to use the script and make a promo as a test run. So I got Mike (production assistant who does voice over work for several things) to do his magic and I began work the next morning. On my first day at working on the promo; it didn’t go as planned. I was hoping that everything would go smoothly, at the time I wanted to show everyone what I was I’m capable of but due to only learning Avid 2 days before and having not much help in how to develop my promo, I went a bit slowly. But, now thinking about it, it was a good thing that everything didn’t go my way at the time as I learn from it. I had to get Mike to re-record the voice over (as promos have to be 20 seconds long and the voice over was less than that), plus there were several issues concerning times and logo use, meaning that I had to stay till 7pm 2 days in a row one week. I worked tremendously hard though, despite my inexperience, the editor I worked with when finishing off the promo and Mark W (Head of Kids) both complimented me on my promo. Saying it was a “fab” first attempt and it really boost the show. Plus I got many “thanks” and kudos for staying late to work on late minute changes. Plus during this time, I was helping Amy with Wakey! Wakey! which is a job in itself, so the last week in May was a tough one but I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Despite the uphill struggle to get there I can say I’m much happier now than I was before, and not just because of the compliments I received. Originally I typed up my ordeal saying it was unfair and, to be honest, whiny about it, but I’m glad I asked Amy to help and pushed myself to get things done as it all worked out in the end! I’m now finished my second promo – Pokemon. So if you happen to be up from 06:00 to 09:25 during the week with nothing to do; switch over to the CITV Channel, ITV4 for the weekdays or ITV1 for the weekend and look out for my promos! They’re on rotation now so hopefully you won’t have to watch too many episodes of Teen Titans before you see my work on screen! Let’s hope that this is the first stepping stone onto something greater.
On the health front; I’ve had a little slip up on my gluten diet. About mid-day on a May Sunday, it was very warm outside so me, mum and Daniel had lunch in our back garden. We had mini snacks such as mackerel, mini sausages, salad, crisps and French bread. I was fine until I stupidly ate half a sausage roll and a pork pie…it was such a stupid mistake as I was thinking “I wonder if this has gluten in it?” as I took a bite of out a mini sausage but the thought didn’t occur to me when I had the pastry of the sausage roll! I had a stomach ache afterwards, which I put down as a “bad day”, it wasn’t till the evening that I realised what I done! Oh well it’s my first slip up since I started my diet, and some good did come of it, even though I had a stomach ache after lunch I actually recovered quicker than before I started it. So I’m getting better! Also; I had a heavy cold during the last week in May. I had one last year but couldn’t take any painkillers or decongestion as they irritated my stomach and made me feel sick. However I felt so fluey that I decided to risk it and take a decongestion. I’m happy to say I had no side effects! I took Decongestion/painkillers during the night time and I felt fine for that as well! Another sign that I’m on the way up! My main concern at the moment is my energy levels; they are not as high as I would like them to be. Sure it’s better than it was a few months ago but I’m still in the situation that if I spend one day with a friend, I have to spend the next few days recovering from it. For example Katy, after seeing the film with her I invited her out to dinner that same weekend. However after going to work, meeting Katy afterwards and not getting home till midnight I was wiped! I had to cancel the dinner, preventing me from seeing Katy again before she went back to university. Still, I can take tablets again and am recovering quicker from gluten, can’t have everything now can I? Feature of the Blog
WONDER BOY IN MONSTER WORLD V. THE DYNASTIC HERO V. ![]() Wonder Boy in Monster World is originally a game that was released back in 1991 for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis. It was later ported to the Sega Master System a certain amount of time later. Several years later, a ‘remake’ was made for the TurboGrafx-CD console, it featured new characters, music and graphics, however due to the consoles limited marketing the game failed to reach the popularity of the original version. Then in 2007 both version were made available on the Wii virtual console.
Wonderboy in Monster World is one of my favourite games of all time, one of the first I’ve played in my lifetime and I still have an original copy of it for the Sega Mega Drive (as well as the console). When I read several years ago about an enhanced version, renamed and in some aspects redone on another console, I was quite intrigued. It never occurred to me that I’ll ever get to play it, so I read much about it as I could on the internet and eventually the interest for it died down. It wasn’t until I bought a Wii and browsed through the virtual consoles that my interest re-sparked, I bought the Wii points needed and downloaded the remade version with glee. A few hours later, having already known what to do and all the boss strategies, I completed the game. It then got me thinking, which game is better and what version should others download if they hadn’t played either title?
Here’s where this guide come in, I’ve broken down nearly every aspect of each game from the plot to the characters, and at the end of each section I’ll select a winner. The one with the most points at the end is the better game; I’ll also do a small evaluation at the end. This comparison is based on my experience with the Sega Mega Drive version of Wonderboy in Monster and the downloaded version of The Dynastic Hero for the Wii. Therefore I will not be comparing controls (as it would be unfair). I’ll try very hard not to give any spoilers away, and if I do it’ll be more on the lines of boss and world descriptions rather than strategies and plot elements. Also, to save typing each game title I’ll use abbreviations, so Wonder Boy in Monster World will be WBIMW and The Dynastic Hero will become TDH.
I would like to thank Sega-16, a Sega site that has many articles and reviews of Sega Mega Drive games for this idea. They original did a comparison of the two games which was very insightful, because of them I decided to take it further, make sure to check out their site! Got that? Good! Let’s crack on…
The Story WBIMW: Shion is a boy who lives in Monster World, a planet infested with monsters (go figure?); he must set out into the world and stop the evil BioMeka’s plans to take over Monster World. Occupied by only his armour and sword, Shion sets off to save his people. TDH: When the Fairy Princess, Brenna, is kidnapped by the lizard king, Mandra, Dyna must set out into the land of Tarron to battle Mandra’s evil forces and save Brenna, along with the rest of the world!
As you can see, the synopsis for both games is no longer than 2 sentences. There isn’t much difference between them apart from name changes and the princess has a slight more reference in TDH (although she’s present in WBIMW and has as much input into the story as TDH’s princess). There isn’t much development in the story throughout either games; the puzzles are the same, the worlds and battle the same bosses are relatively the same and the order to complete each one are identical. Both stories are not grammy-nomination worthy; they’re just there to set the scene more than anything.
Winner: Draw
The Hero Every adventure needs a hero right? Who’s going to slay the beasts and save the damsel in distress when there’s no hero?! WBIMW is centred on Shion, a blue haired boy with silver armour and a sword as company on his travels. With big anime eyes and no other facial features, he fits well with the Monster World environment as it has many cartoon based themes. His upgradeable weapon and armour only have small details between them but are effective enough to tell the difference between each upgrade and don’t make the hero look over done.
TDH’s main character is, in one word, ugly! Dyna has a too detailed armour design and its all one colour, so it comes off as this big beetle armour mush! With his serious facial expression, he looks like a human who stumbled upon a cartoon world and is trying to get out! Who can blame him? If I stumbled into a world where everyone was much cuter and colourful than me I wouldn’t want to stick around for long! The details on the upgradeable weapons and armour are slightly altered and have different colours, but these don’t flatter the already too detailed beetle armour.
Shion was created with the Monster World; therefore he fits better in it and doesn’t look quite so dorky. Dyna was remake with the rest of the cast to give the remake a bit of an edge; ultimately Dyna is the worst looking out of all the remade characters!
Winner: Wonderboy in Monster World
Gameplay Both games operate like a platform game with added RPG elements, the games mostly involve jumping at the correct times to reach platforms, fighting random enemies and collecting gold to buy new armour for the dungeon ahead. Both TDH and WBIMW flow fluidly from walking around the screen to throwing the sword at the enemy. Jumping is an easy task (important in platform games, if you can’t get jumping correct the game falls apart) as the buttons respond well. Entering through doors and areas in WBIMW is quick in simple, yet in TDH it seems to enter ‘slow mo’ mode when walking through doors, it’s quite noticeable if you’ve played WBIMW previously. Our heroes can also perform magic; the character learns magic as the game progresses and can also increase the amount of times a spell can cast if they find the relevant hidden treasure chests. Magic is set on the bar at the top of the screen, two spells can be set at once, you perform spells by pressing the action button and selecting left or right (depending what spell you want). Somehow, in WBIMW, it’s much easier to perform as you can hold the action button and alternate between both left and right commands. In TDH however, you must press both buttons together at the exact same time, plus an enemy must be within range to perform. Therefore performing spells is slightly easier in WBIMW. Winner: Wonder Boy in Monster World.
The Graphics WBIMW had colourful graphics, they were detailed enough to separate the hero from the townfolk and demonstrate each world as its own. For the Sega Mega Drive, they were lovely visuals, though not the best, they did the job quite nicely for a side scrolling game. TDH pretty much keeps the visuals from WBIMW but introduces a more varied colour palette, sure they are not as bright as its older partner but TDH gives depth to rocky mountains and adds the shine to the monsters where they were flat before. TDH is for the PC Engie/TurboGrafx CD, which I don’t have much experience in, but from what I seen there was not much else they could improve massively on visual wise, they did what they could; it would be unfair to give the edge to TDH when the graphics were basically the same as WBIMW.
Winner: Wonderboy in Monster World
The Music The WBIMW soundtrack, while not groundbreaking enough to be released onto a CD, had its charm. The melodies were simple but they were catchy, easy to remember (so they get stuck in your head easily) and they complimented each world very well. Even when some the tracks were repeated (e.g. the background track for the Pyramid level is the same for the Volcano level), the songs worked well with the cartooned theme world and its inhabitants, the music is a joy to listen to overall.
I haven’t found any proof yet but I’m almost convinced that Seikou Nagaoka, the composer for the original Tenchi Muyo OVA, provided the music for TDH. My first clue was that the song in the opening FMV had a song lifted from the Tenchi Muyo OVA soundtrack but with added lyrics! The rest of the tracks have many similar elements compared to the Tenchi Muyo soundtrack as well but it’s the opening song that gave it away. I did like his work on the Tenchi Muyo OVA soundtrack, I even have some of soundtrack on my ipod, but the tracks composed for TDH, though nice and easy on the ears, are not memorable. They are MP3 files and each track tries to bring something else into each level that the previous soundtrack doesn’t, but several tracks (like the main hero in TDH) are too serious compared to the cartoon styled enemies and environment, and some are even too quirky (if that makes any sense?). Seikou Nagaoka tries his best, you can’t deny the music is good, but several tracks that are repeated work with one world but not the other. Using the same example above, for the music in the Pyramid level, Seikou Nagaoka adds an ‘Egyptian’ theme to it, which is fair enough but when the track is used for the volcano level as well, it feels out of place. Both soundtracks are good in their own right, but the edge ultimately goes to…
Winner: Wonderboy in Monster World
The Script TDH script is all over the place, many item and equipment names were changed when there was no need (such as Pygmy Armour was changed to Tiny Armour, or something like that), but their purpose remained unchanged. TDH script tries to ‘jazz’ it up slightly, such as the characters offer a little more conversation and information compared to WBIMW, where all the townsfolk seem to be blunt and robotic. TDH also tries to be ‘hip’, such as providing the lines “What’s Up?”, “Y’know?”, “Go get ‘em!” etc, it almost seems like a ‘dumb down’ version of the original WBIMW script, which wasn’t exactly hard to follow to begin with! Where TDH sinks more though is spelling, oh the spelling, even the most simple to spell words are left uncorrected. Sure, I’m not the best example of a good speller, but you’d think that SOMEONE would have corrected where someone else went wrong, especially on the RE-RELEASE on the Wii virtual console! Shame on those who couldn’t be bothered! The WBIMW script may not be very heart warming and more to the point, but at least there are no spelling mistakes, items have relevant names and it’s easy to follow without making the player feel patronised. Winner: Wonderboy in Monster World.
Friends and Foes This was the section I was most interested in when I found out about TDH, in this comparison I discovered a while back, it stated that most friends were replaced with cute creatures (such as bees and fairies) and the enemies are now all different. This section was the main reason my curiosity for TDH got the better of me.
Let’s start with the hero’s companions, both heroes gain friends to help them in certain dungeons throughout the game. The companions range from help defeat enemies to finding hidden hearts and gold. They cannot leave the town they originate from, so therefore they have limited use. At first they seem untouched (apart from having slightly different coloured sprites), it’s not until you reach the Ice World when you notice the change. The ultra cool mini grim reaper in WBIMW is replaced with an ugly flying beetle and the even cooler baby dragon is replaced by a girly bee. What’s the problem with that you ask? First of, the Ice World where you obtain the grim reaper/beetle is also known as the ‘Dark World’, it makes sense for a grim reaper to be there but not the beetle, I did a little research and I’m pretty sure beetles are not fond of the cold, therefore you would not find them in a glacier town. The same principle goes for the bee, originally known as the Dragon world, it’s located next to a volcano and it’s also near the desert, where a large pyramid is also located. Again, with little research, bees like warm weather to collect pollen but I’m pretty sure they would object to the heat from a volcano! (If I’m wrong about any of these facts please feel free to correct me). Then again, the incarnations of both helpers do the same amount of damage to enemies and provide the same amount of input to the story (which is not a lot) so apart from my rant above there’s not much difference.
Now onto the enemies, all the baddies on the TDH that the hero kills to progress and obtain gold are all the same. However apart from two, all of the bosses have had a make over. The bosses are now all a type of reptile, including the giant mushroom being replaced by a giant toad, the snowman in the ice world is now an ice dragon (a beautiful looking on too!); the two boulders in the dwarf village are now two turtles, and so on. It makes sense in a way to have all the enemies a collective race, but the mini baddies on the field that the hero kills seem distanced from the bosses all together, you’d think that the reptile baddies would send some reptile fiends to hold the hero off, but not one is in sight. The baddies are nicely designed and are easily the most detailed character sprites within TDH, it’s a shame they didn’t stretch their efforts to the smaller enemies as well.
Lastly, the random strangers that the hero talks to and/or saves within the game are mostly the same. The human’s walking around and sitting behind the shop counters are all intact, the only major changes are made to those who have a little more input into the story. For example the Dark World Prince is now non existent in TDH and the Princess you save early on has a new wardrobe, hair and breasts implants! You get a glimpse of her in the opening anime sequence of TDH; she has a wacky purple dress, green hair and Jordan’s breasts. Actually, all the new female characters created for the game seem to have had breast enhancements.
Personally, I don’t like some of the new characters; mainly my complaint goes towards the new helpers and the females that aid the hero in TDH. I understand if they wanted to add more females to the game to make it appeal a wider audience, but the size of the breasts are just ridiculous! Ok, I’m an anime fan and should be used to this sort of art by now since Japan like to make the female’s cleavage defy gravity, but still, it bugs me somewhat that TDH is basically a big strong man saving the world for these well endowed defenceless women.
Maybe I’m reading too much into something that’s not there, but that’s the impression I get from this game. Don’t get me wrong, I think they were quite creative about the new bosses, but WBIMW characters fitted better into the context of the story and were more suitable for the intended audience.
Winner: Wonderboy in Monster World
Difficulty This section is a little complicated considering that there’s no obvious winner, throughout both games I made many comparisons regarding this subject. First off; the enemies are easier on TDH, this is not so obvious early on but as you progress, you notice that both run-of-the-mill enemies and bosses take more damage from the weapons provided. For example, in the beginning of the Ice World in WBIMW with the strongest weapon you can get before entering the town, you can kill the penguin enemies in 4 hits. However in the same situation in TDH, the penguin is destroyed in 3. In fact it seems like the enemies get easier as you progress, so the final boss is a pushover (especially without the buzz saw!).
On the other hand, TDH comes off as tight-fisted, for instance the enemies provide you with less gold, the difference is very noticeable in the last dungeon, as this place was a source for much gold if you wished to save up to buy some of the more expensive items in the game. Building up money to purchase weapons in TDH takes longer as items are worth the same much as in WBIMW. Also the potions that can be bought to recover the character’s health are very stingy! Early on in the game in WBIMW, the standard potion recovers the character completely and as the hero gains more hearts; you need to buy a stronger potion. In TDH, the weakest potion available recovers HALF of what the same potion in WBIMW does! The same principle applies to the elixirs (a potion that revives a fallen character once), the enemies have less health, but they do the same amount of damage to your character, so the player must be a bit more cautious in TDH. Despite this, I only died during one boss battle early on the game, the rest of them were a walk in the park. To sum it up, in TDH, it’s easier to kill and to be killed!
Another factor is the save points, in WBIMW you must save the game at the inn and if you happen to die, you’ll be greeted with a ‘GAME OVER’ screen and must re-start from where you last saved it. In TDH, if you die, you are brought back to the inn fully recovered, however your potions and elixir (if used before dying) are gone so must re-stock (spending money you lack in this version) but you don’t have to re-do any puzzles or switches activated before you died. So in many situations, you could just simply walk back to the boss battle with little to stop you. Overall I feel that WBIMW has the right balance between recovery items and damage taken, damage dealt and enemy HP and buying weapons with money obtained. Despite being slightly harder and the final boss can prove to be quite tiresome, WBIMW feels more like a triumph at the end while TDH is quite easy throughout with little after rewards. Either way, which ever version you play first, the other version will be no different, puzzle solving wise.
Winner: Wonderboy in Monster World.
Endings and Replay Value Everything must come to an end right? Sadly happiness is not eternal, but games can be if they are enjoyable enough to tackle it from the beginning all over again, or if there are enough extras to come back to later on. Both games lack replay value, unless like me you loved the game at a tender age and long to re-live your old favourites. There are no unlockables to speak of, there are a few hidden things (such as hard-to-find chests, getting max on all magic, etc) but unless you loved the game first time round you’re unlikely to pick it up again. TDH has 4 save files, so if you’re the type of person who likes to try various ways of completing a game (like with the weakest weapon, or without dying) you can achieve it here and keep records of your achievements. However WBIMW has 1 save file only, so if you want to play from the beginning again you’ll lose your current record. Ending wise, TDH comes out on top, it ties the hero with his old friends (so they don’t look like they were taken advantage and then disposed of like in WBIMW) and you’re also treated to a viewing of several world and character artwork in the credits. In WBIMW, the ending is rather abrupt and shows hints of a possible romantic interest with a particular character, but it’s nothing spectacular. Both endings are not going to win any awards, but TDH is the lesser of the two evils.
Winner: The Dynastic Hero
Price and Memory If you wish to purchase the original copies of both games, you can buy WBIMW cheaply in a second hand shop (if they’ve got it) or on eBay; I bought my copy for a fiver. Sega Mega Drive consoles are not too hard to locate and purchase neither. On the other hand, the original copy of TDH is very rare and difficult to find, just as much as the console it was available on. If you do happen to find it be prepared to burn a hole in your pocket. Both titles are available to purchase on the virtual console for 800 wii points each in Europe territories, which makes tracking down TDH so much easier and you pay a decent price for it! Considering TDH was a nightmare to find before hand, the edge goes to TDH, despite the fact that TDH takes up slightly more memory on your Wii memory.
Winner: The Dynastic Hero
Conclusion TDH – 2 WBIMW – 7 Draw – 1
Well the numbers speak for themselves, as the old saying goes, nothing can ‘out do’ an original, whether it’s a game, film or television series, the original is always closer to people’s hearts. So where does that lead those who have never touch either game? Wonder Boy in Monster World was one of the best well known games on the Sega Mega Drive, all the elements work well with each other and it presents small challenges in its short life span. The Dynastic Hero is nothing more than WBIMW with a touch of cosmetic surgery; it’s like watching a film you’re fond of with improved special effects and with alternative costumes. Underneath the visuals nothing much has changed. If you pride yourself in playing/owning games that are rare and worth a fortune, The Dynastic Hero is the game for you. If you prefer the original version, Wonder Boy in Monster World is the one to go for. In the end, they are both good games and worth a play through if you want a good, cheap and quick RPG/platform game. Well that's it from me mainly due to the fact that I've been so busy for the past month and I wanted to type this up quickly before my 20th birthday next week. I'll return in full form in July!
This is me, last entry as 19 years old, over and out. April 24 Welcome to Spring!
You're probably wondering why I have a picture of a snowy garden when the title has "Spring" on it. Well let me tell you, that picture is a photo of my garden on Sunday 6th April 2008. Yes it's meant to be SPRING and yet THIS is the weather we get in England! I shouldn't be complaining really as it's now Thursday 24th April and the sun is starting to blaze through...but I just thought I'd share that with you!
Life Update
Andy came back home for a 3 week Easter holiday; since I was unable to take time off for him (since Mark, my boss, was on holiday and I’m the only one capable of covering for him) I only got to see him at the weekend. Despite seeing each other for 3 weekends we didn’t get up to much as one weekend I was ill; we mainly chilled at each others houses, took a work one day when the weather was lovely, played some games, just chilling really. I plan to hopefully visit him at uni one weekend in May or June as I haven’t seen his uni since October 2006. When he next comes home it’ll be a few days after my birthday (June 16th) and a few days before I go on holiday! Yes despite not being fully recovered from my previous trip overseas I’m off to Greece for one week in June. I’m a little frightened actually, I’m still ‘on edge’ since my last holiday and since I know that even the WATER is lethal in Greece, I’m a little anxious. I’m sure once I’m out there lying by the pool side in the glorious sun I’ll be fine but when even your mother is concerned about you going (all parents are when their child goes on holiday abroad without for the first time), you can’t help but feel more so yourself.
I saw Landa during the back holiday Easter weekend; I picked her up from her house, drove to Bluewater for a meal and some shopping. Whilst I was at her home (that I hadn’t been to in ages) I got re-acquainted with her parents. I saw her mum just before Christmas 2006 (!) but her dad I haven’t since…I can’t remember! Their English has gotten far (they’re from Yucaslavia), they both seemed well and they looked happy to see me (always a bonus - pleasing parents). At Bluewater it was quite busy (expected as it was a bank holiday), so we decided against the cinema as the queue was so freaking long! We had a nice Chinese lunch at Amoy and browsed some shops. I didn’t buy anything but Landa bought some jewellery and other random crap. We also had a coffee before I dropped her home. It's always nice to see Landa, even if our catch ups tend to be short. I plan to take her out after her exams have finished in May - maybe after that we can see each other more.
I took both Tuesday 15th and Wednesday 16th off in April to celebrate my mum’s birthday! Her big day was Tuesday but I took the following day off as mum and Daniel were both on Easter holidays and I wanted to spend more time with them. The evening before, Monday after work, we went into London for dinner out. After a walk looking at all the restaurants in Leister square we settled on ‘Rock Garden’. It’s quite pretentious but the food was lovely! I had sea bass with Ratatouille (which I’ve never had before) and I ate every little bit of it! The fruit drinks they provide are nice too. On mum’s actual birthday she had a cold so didn’t feel too great, but we took a nice drive on the lovely sunny day to Faringham. It's about a 10 minute drive from my old 6th for college (North West Kent, Dartford), we has lunch at the Lion Hotel (food was ok, didn't have what I originally wanted) and then took a gentle stroll around the area 'cos the weather was lovely. Farningham looks like a 'country side' sort fo town; there's lots of greenery, small old houses, streams and very narrow roads! It looks lively in the sushine and a perfect place to settle down since it's so homely and quiet - but I knew as soon as the weather turned icy I would be cursing whoever built those roads! We went back home to rest *cough play computer games cough* and then went out again for dinner at the Laughing Buddha (a Chinese restaurant near where I live). We always like this restaurant but we don’t go it very often, so it was nice to come back to it. The next day was not as easy going as we had to take care of my littlest brothers; Robert and Oliver. First we did a bit of shopping (the boys were well behaved) and then we drove to Wilmington (again near my college) for a lunch out. The food was nice (gammon and home made chips) and although the weather wasn't as nice as yesturday and the outside play area was quite scruffy and falling apart - we had a laugh. I usually don't spend much time with them apart from when they pop round to say hi with Brian, Daniel usually sees them every weekend. But I really enjoyed that day as I was able to actually feel like their sister; I played football with Robbie as Daniel ordered the food, I taught Ollie how to swing himself (I had a go myself to feed my inner child), I had more energy that day that I've had in the past year! It made a nice change. Later on we came home, me and Daniel taught the boys how to play the wii. We played Mario Kart (with the wii wheel) and Wii sports, a few tears kicked off when Robbie lost and wanted a wii for his own when he had to leave. Overall it was a good day.
What’s the status on my on-going health problems you ask? Well… I’ve started my new diet that I mentioned in my previous blog; I’ve cut out wheat, gluten and dairy. It’s been hard, I’ve had my ups and downs but the benefits do out weigh what I’ve given up. First of; my stomach has been a LOT better, I still had my bad days/moments but I have more energy, I can do more, I don’t have to lie down as much after eating whilst before I was always in pain after eating, plus I’ve lost some weight! The bad side is that I didn’t realise so much stuff had gluten and wheat in them! Dairy was not so bad as I was originally allergic to dairy when I was about 8 so I’m used to not eating dairy by now, but the gluten…its in bread, pasta, pastry…so I can’t eat Yorkshire puddings (love them with roasts), pizza, pita bread with kebabs, burgers beer-battered or bread crumbed fish (so its a nightmare when trying to order a take away), cakes, garlic bread…so some of my favourite things! And although I’ve bought some gluten-free stuff from Sainsbury’s and Morrison’s – most of them don’t substitute the real thing. I’ll just be glad when I’m fully recovered!
As for the ‘high liver function’ I mentioned in my previous entry; I had another blood test since then and although it’s still higher than the level it should be, it’s decreased since my last reading. The doctor said it might be because some people’s livers are fattier than others; it could also be raised if I’ve gained any weight lately (which I have). He wants to keep an eye on it just in case and have another test in 6 months. Several weeks later I got a letter stating that the last test result from my blood came through and apparently my copper levels are high…so now he wants ANOTHER blood test and a 24-hour urine sample…sigh…when will this ever end? Now let’s move onto a NEW FEATURE on my blog! Basically, I wanted to ‘punch’ up my blog a little more, at the moment it’s just my life, a brief introduction and reviews. I often have random thoughts that I wish to share, typed “top 10” lists or comparison stuff that, eventually, get abandoned or get archived onto my personal crap. So I decided to include a new section to cover all of them; so let’s welcome my new section…’Feature of the Blog!’ Ok, as a title it’s as crappy as my other ones, but like I said before if you can think of something better be my guest! Let’s open my first feature with a TOP 5...(I've got something better for next time I promise!) Feature of the Blog
TOP 5 GAMES I WANT FOR THE WII VIRTUAL CONSOLE
Title: Jewel Master Platform: Sega Mega Drive Genre: Action, Platform Synopsis: In the fantasy land of Mythgard the people lived in peace until Jardine, the demon king, came to overthrow the world. There were twelve Jewel Masters who brought together their rings of power consisting of Fire, Water, Earth, and Soul, but their battle failed and only four masters survived. Knowing of their ultimate demise, they passed their souls into the twelve now-lost rings, hoping that one day a chosen one would find them and use their combined strength to take one final stand against Jardine.
Jewel Master was never immensely popular, but it was quite a unique concept, it required thought on which rings to use to battle enemies and since there are multiple combinations there’s no telling how many ways there are to defeat this game. It has many “platform” game qualities mixed with well-thought out combat. The graphics were not the best on the system yet had good production values. I never actually defeated this game (from what I can remember), I think I kept getting to the last level then die from lack of health no many what I tired. The game is known for getting increasingly difficult as you progress. Mum eventually sold the game when she couldn’t finish it either, and despite our best efforts – we haven’t been unable to find this game again in any second hand shops.
It would be great if it was made available on the Wii Virtual Console, as it would save the trouble of me finding it and it would be a cool addition to the virtual console library.
Title: Gods Platform: Sega Mega Drive, SNES, Atari ST Genre: Platformer, Action Synopsis: Who would have thought that a man would be so foolish or so daring as to accept a challenge set down by the Gods? And yet one came forward to claim the right to test his skills and strengths against a city so legendary its name alone struck fear in the hearts of all who heard it spoken.
Like Jewel Master above, Gods was not a ground breaking title, although it has a fan page (much more than what I could find on Jewel Master) it was not the first title that spring to people minds when they words “Sega Mega Drive/Genesis” were said. It was a dark game in nature, the colours in the game favoured black brown and grey, the cover was mainly black and the main character looked like a very muscular gladiator. That doesn’t mean it wasn’t a good game, it was, from what I can remember. It was a platform game by nature but the main character had to battle some very threatening looking enemies.
There are plenty of platform games currently on the Wii Virtual Console and many more to come from the Sega Mega Drive games library, but this is one title that shouldn’t be skipped.
Title: Soleil (a.k.a. Ragnacenty, Crusader of Centy) Platform: Sega Mega Drive Genre: Action RPG Synopsis: The story centers on Corona, a boy who has just turned 14 years of age. It is time for him to inherit his father's sword and fight the "monsters" that threaten the human race's very existence, attaining animals to help his quest along the way.
First of, I still have the original copy of this title for the Sega Mega Drive, so the reason for wanting it on the virtual console is not that. I mainly want it for insurance (in case my original copy packs up one day) and for others to experience this great game. Along side Phantasy Star 3, this was one of the first RPGs I played and loved. At the time I was unaware but nowadays this game is compared to the series “Legend of Zelda”, mainly for the control style and the fact that the lead has a sword, as far as I’m aware nothing else. The game play involves Corona sword fighting his enemies and having animals enchanted his sword with their own special abilities. The story is interesting, the game itself is short and easy but it’s a great game overall. I want this available to download so other can experience this title as well, if Wonderboy in Monster World is available why not this game?
Just to note; Soleil is the European title, Crusader of Centy is the American title and Ragnacenty is the Japanese title.
Title: Wiz ‘n’ Liz Platform: Sega Mega Drive, Amiga Genre: Platform, Side scrolling, puzzle Synopsis: Wiz and Liz are two wizards who cast spells dumping various items into their gigantic cauldron. Watch them zip across the screen, gathering all the items they can and battle big bosses to save the wabbits (bunny rabbits).
This game is quite hard to describe as it has no set plot and it has many elements from various different game genres. Its side scrolling, it involves various puzzles, battling various large bosses, casting spells, entering various worlds, etc, etc. The game is full of life and colour, despite being hard to describe no one can deny that it’s not cute, I mean come on “wabbits”, all together now: “aaaawwwww”…. There’s plenty in this game to do in your first run, there are also many difficulty settings to keep you coming back for more. It’s a very unique put together title that belongs on the Nintendo Wii Virtual Console, besides this game was made by the same team who produced “Lemmings”, how can you say no?
Title: Clock Tower (The First Fear) Platform: SNES, PC, Playstation, WonderSwan Genre: Survival Horror Synopsis: When Jennifer and 3 of her friends are adopted by the Barrows family, they are taken to a strange mansion known as “Clock Tower”. When their adoptive mother, Mary, goes missing within the house, Jennifer sets out to look for her. She then encounters scissorman, a demonic child carrying a huge pair of scissors with every intention to kill her and her friends. Can Jennifer escape alive?
Clock Tower is known for being one of the pioneers for survival horror games; it’s also one of the first to incorporate multiple endings. Clock Tower was first released on the SNES back in 1995; it was later ported to the other consoles after it became very popular; however it was never released outside of Japan. Its sequels have been released worldwide since then, two on the Playstation and the newest one on the PS2. The original game has been fan translated and released as a downloadable ROM for others to experience but I don’t trust ROMs so I haven’t had a chance to experience this title myself.
I know Nintendo are known for being “family friendly” but there’s a big enough fan base for “Clock Tower” to be a big download hit on the virtual console if given the chance. It’s unlike anything that’s available on the virtual console channel at the moment and it’s also unlike any other survival horror game currently avaliable (except for Haunting Ground, which is now out of print). The only difficulty is that the series was originally owned by Human Entertainment, the company folded in 1999, and although the 4th Clock Tower game (Known as Clock Tower 3) was released by Capcom, I don’t know if they own the rights to the first game as well. I hope so, as I would love to play Clock Tower one day in the future. The WahWah Views
This week we journey back into the Survival Horror catalogue and look into the sequel to 2004's title; Obscure. You can see my review for Obscure here. Remember you can also see more of my reviews on my amazon profile.
Title: Obscure 2 (a.k.a Obscure: The Aftermath) Genre: Survival Horror Platform: Playstation 2, PC, Wii Certificate: 16+ Rating: 4/5
I haven’t been into survival horror for very long, 6 months at most, but from what I’ve seen so far I’ve highly enjoyed. Most of the survival horror titles I’ve played have been more psychological and centred on impacting fear through that, rather than gruesome monsters and heavy shooting. I bought a second hand copy of Obscure simply out of curiosity after reading a review highly recommending it, thought it was short and had its faults, I did still enjoy it somewhat and it was enough to make me pick up a copy of the sequel. Despite fearing it would be a copy of its predecessor I am glad to say that not only did I enjoy it more that Obscure 1 but am highly looking forward to another sequel (if they have plans to make one).
Obscure 2 takes place 2 years after the prequel, the 6 survivors of the awful events that happened at Leafmore High are now moving on and living their own lives, taking medication to suppress the mutation that affected them during the first game. Now at college, it seems as if history is about to repeat itself as strange purple flowers have started sprouting around the campus, sending students on a ‘high’ and eventually turn them into monsters! Accompanied by new allies, can the survivors of Leafmore High survive once more? Obscure 2’s plot, like Obscure, is based upon teen horror/slasher movies, so there’s plenty of cheese and horror to go around. Obscure’s plot was quite predictable and lacking at the best of times but Obscure 2 is greatly improved. The beginning is very strong, although the middle part fades slightly it picks up with an unexpected twist towards the climax and the ending leaves a cliffhanger in hopes it’ll return for Obscure 3. Obscure 2 makes references to drugs, sex, death and suicide – so it’s darker than its predecessor.
You have 8 characters to venture against the darkness with, 3 who are survivors from Obscure 1. The new characters include the Asian twins Mei and Jun who are computer game geeks, Amy who’s also know as ‘Miss Wet T-Shirt of the Month’ and Corey, who is a skater. All characters have their own unique abilities that are all put to use to progress in the game; such as Mei ability to hack into computers, Amy’s skill at decrypting and Sven’s ultra strength to move heavy objects. Most abilities are just used for puzzle solving, this sadly takes away some of the creative fun as some abilities in the previous instalment could be used for combat and other purposes, however they are well performed with the co-operative game play. The characters have much more of a personality than the previous title; several times they’ll chat amongst themselves as you progress in the game, mostly it’s just chit-chat but other times they offer clues if you’re not sure where to go next. Some of the scripted lines are quite amusing and add to the joy this title gives.
Graphics are detailed enough to see the blood, monsters and gore! Screenshot courtesy of Eurogamer
The graphics are quite luscious and detailed, the characters are nicely designed and all weapons are quite distinguishable. The characters movements are still quite stiff (especially noticeable when climbing or moving objects) and it’s not without its glitches, but it’s a definite improvement on the previous instalment.
Most character voices are performed well enough, cheesy, but considering the plot is cheesy in itself, the voices fit the game, although some of the returning characters sound quite different to their older counterparts. The music is slightly more prominent than Obscure 1 and it is more fitting to the surroundings, it’s still obvious that the composer was inspired by the likes of Akira Yamaoka (Silent Hill Composer) but he adds his own spin to the horror genre.
The mainly selling point of this and the previous game is the 2 player co-operative mode. In any stage during the game, a second player can plug in a second remote and control the second character. Like the previous game most of the time it works very well, controls are easy to get used to and whenever one player goes into another room the other player automatically joins them. If however you prefer to face the darkness alone, the second character is controlled by A.I. Luckily the computer controlled character handily sees and attacks enemies that you haven’t seen yet or whilst you’re solving a puzzle. But they like to stick very close to your character and in many situations when you have to backtrack they end up getting in the way a lot of the time. In Obscure 2 acting together is even more vital as many situations and puzzles require you switch between characters such as one to pull the other up onto a high place to escape enemies, this helped built up many “tension” parts of the game and provided more for your friend playing rather than just “following the leader”.
The camera is, unfortunately, poor for both solo and 2 player game modes. The camera likes to stick right behind player one’s arse or pick the worse possible angle in certain rooms. You’re only given a small amount of control over it with the right analogue stick and whatever changes you do make, it doesn’t stick. Sad to say, you’ll the fighting more with the camera than with the enemies themselves!
A great addition to this title is the extensive use of puzzles, apart from shooting mutated monsters this title features some of the most exciting and varied puzzles, I haven’t seen so many since my old PC days when Sierra was at it’s high with titles such as Shivers and King’s Quest. They range from putting pieces of a jigsaw together (such as torn up maps), to word games (used in Mei’s computer hacking ability) and lock picking (Obscure just had you hold down a button, now you must actually work the pin through the lock!). Others include working the more acrobatic characters up onto high platforms and get them safely across to the other side of the room. There’s enough in the game to break up all the battles yet doesn’t overwhelm those who can’t stand to think with their heads neither. They were easily my favourite part of this title. If anything this should be built up more if there was an Obscure 3.
One of my favourite puzzles; Mei's hacking into computers Screenshot courtesy of Eurogamer
Apart from the puzzles the only factor that makes this title slightly challenging is the lack of healing items and ammo. The previous game became increasingly difficult towards the end as healing items became rare and ammo was hard to find. This has been slightly altered in Obscure 2; healing items will appear in rooms if you happen to have a low supply – handy when you need it the most, not so much if you prefer to store some in your inventory for future boss battles. As for the ammo, it’s still scarce and hard to come by, but more weapons are available in this title, so if one gun is out of ammo you won’t be left to fight with your bare hands.
Like Obscure, the sequel incorporates melee and projectile combat in order to defeat the monsters that go bump in the night, you’ll be saying hello again to the bat and hockey stick, as well as enjoy the new additions such as crossbows and chainsaws. This somewhat takes away the ‘realism’ from the game, as Obscure mainly used items that could be found inside a school. Although Obscure 2 visits more areas, I highly doubt a hospital would keep a shot gun inside a broom closet!
An element that I miss from Obscure is the use of light; the enemy is highly photosensitive in both Obscure 1 & 2, in the prequel the students had to tape flash lights to their guns and aim the light at the enemy in order to kill the harmful creatures. Not only was this very unique and clever but it added some strategy to the combat that other gun based games lack. I was very sad to find that this game play element did not return for Obscure 2, the combat is now purely aim and attack. It’s good news for those who prefer just to get straight down to the killing but it’s such a shame that an element that made Obscure stand out was taken away in the next instalment.
Another element that was prominent in its prequel yet not in this title is replay value. Obscure had multiple difficulty levels, new weapons, costumes and even music videos to unlock. However Obscure 2 has nothing. Bugger all, zilch. No rewards for completing the game. So unless you have a friend to bring along to play every once in a while you won’t be returning to this title in a hurry once you’ve finished it.
Other faults include being able to hit your partner (a stupid feature to add as the computer controlled character is almost always in your way, although it’s funny when the character speaks of annoyance when being hit), the short life span (although longer than Obscure, still not enough for most gamers) and the irritating saving system; which involves observing flowers scattered throughout the game, however they disappear once you’ve use it once. This becomes a problem as the game has many levels that your characters will visit more than once, so after your first visit you’ll have to wait longer to save when you next drop by. It’s even more infuriating as in Obscure 2, if any of your two characters controlling dies you have to start from where you last saved it, quite different to Obscure 1 where you could continue on. One last error is that no explanation is given to the characters from the first game that fail to appear in Obscure 2, although there is a hidden cut scene you can unlock towards the end of the game that features them – it raises more questions than answers any, the way to unlock it is not obvious and you can easily complete the game without knowing its there.
Overall this is a very worthy sequel, highly enjoyable and great for both single players and for those who wish to bring on a friend. If you’ve never played the first game I recommend getting a copy before purchasing this, if it’s just for the 2 player action then you can probably get away with just reading the character bios to get the jest of Obscure 1 plot. It’s a very good buy, especially when a brand new copy is only £20 – it’s worth every penny! Song of the Blog
First of all let me apologise for last week as none of the links I used wanted to play the Utada song longer than 24 hours, so I gave up finding another link after a week. But the new album 'Heart Station' is out now and diffiently worth a listen! You can now purchase via CDJapan.co.jp or online from itunes!
This week I have something different. Its not a new track, nor a J-pop track, it's good ol Brit pop! It's from one of my favourite albums of all time and from a highly talented band.

Firstly, I'd like to apologise for my previous entry, due to my very long review section most of my personal touches were removed. Though my life update was passed onto my live journal (which I've updated cosmetically, check it out), my entry still came across came across as blunt and rushed! It won't be the case with this and hopefully future entries, so my apologises for my previous update. Now that's out of the way...
I've noticed an increase in popularity on MSN spaces, at first I thought it was just passing interest but every week I seem to get friend request from a random persone, my blog gets about 15 - 40 views per day and several comments have been sumitted to some of my earlier entries. Thank you for those who've dropped by and expressed their views whilst here. Much appriciated! Who knows? MSN spaces may be the next 'big thing' for social based sites? Well it's had a few updates lately, you never know.
Anyways, enough blabber - let's get on with it shall we?
Life Update
Not much has really changed since my last entry, some events have occured and things has changed but nothing to exciting. My life update will be small today.
My Valentine's Day wasn't exactly romantic, not that I planned it to be after Andy told me that a friend of his has died and his was on Valentines day. Oddly enough I didn't have the heart to say; "Hey after we bury your dead friend can we have a romantic meal afterwards?". I still saw him on VDay, I took the day off to be supportive and attend the wake (as I thought it would be rude to attend the funeral when I hardly knew the guy and did not know his family). The wake took place at a pub nearby me, luckily I manage to get a parking space. We were only there for about an hour (as Andy said he is not very good at wakes), mainly it was him catching up with friends he hadn't seen since secondary school. Afterwards we drove back to his house, it was an easy quiet day but he appriciated that I took the day off to be with him. Oddly enough this was my first experience with funerals/wakes in my lifetime, hopefully my next will not be close.
My Anniversary Weekend took place between 16th - 18th February, I took Monday off (my actual anniversary day) to spend with Andy whilst he was home for the week. We went to the cinema on Saturday and saw Sweeney Todd as we are both Tim Burton fans. I knew it was a musical but I didn't realise it was a black comedy too, I found myself laughing the whole way through. The singing was brilliant (though some songs were repeated too much) and the actors did a hell of a job. It was very enjoyable indeed. He spent the nigth round mine (first in a while) and Sunday we mainly chilled at home, had Sunday roast and then I spent the night at his place. Sadly I suddenly felt ill on my actual aniverary day and had to cut our plans short, I felt pretty much weak and fragile for the rest of the week. But on Saturday (before he went back to uni) we relaxed at his home and it was a much better day.
We've now been going out for 3 years! It's been a struggle the past year but I can safely say that we've had some great times too, my illness has been a test for the both of us but we've become stronger because of it.
On February 29th, my mum met up with a friend of hers that she hadn't seen in 15 years! Her name is Debbie, they've been friends since secondary school, I met up with mum after school whilst they were catching up over drinks. I hadn't met Debbie before but she seemed very nice and made me think about my friends deelpy. I've hardly seen them since I feel ill, and even before then I took time for granted. For example George, he now lives in Maidstone and I said before I'll drive and visit him one day yet it has never come to pass. Another example is Rhiannon, a friend since primary school who now lives near Manchester and yet I haven't seen her in years! I hope once I'm fully recovered I'll get to catch up with all my friends and in the future, the friendships will still shine like Debbie and my mums.
Now what about my health eh? Noticed that I haven't mentioned it much in this entry yet?
Well, I'm better than I was in my previous entry, several things have changed since then that have helped me physically and mentally. To start off, during January and February I kept getting asked to do studio for Toonattik, but I keep feeling weak, ill, depressed and saw no light at the end of the tunnel. At one point I got so wound up that I told Becky (Senior Producer of Toonattik) that I couldn't do it anymore. I got quite tearful (unfortunetly) despite not wanting to make a scene, she understood and got someone to cover for me. It was then that I had enough, I went back to the private doctor at Blackheath hospital to ask if there was anything he could do to help me. He put me back on a set of tablets to take at night and recommened I got a blood test to rule out anything else wrong with me. I returned a month later to find that my liver function was quite high, this was noticed last year when I first got sick but was not looked into deeply as they assumed it was a one-off thing. I've had to had another blood test (a fasting one, which I hate as you're weak enough from lack of food and when bloods bring drawn you feel even worse!) which I don't got the results back for another couple of weeks. I'm sure everything will be ok, if not, I'll work my way through it, I've gotten this far since I got sick a year ago on 31st March, I don't plan to give up now!
In addition, my mum found a book called; "The Eat Right Diet", it's basically a book of dieting centered on blood types. Apparently different blood types react differently to different types of food, so what one group of food could be benefical to one blood type can prove to be the opposite in another. My mother read that 'gluten' is bad for type blood 'O', especially those with IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome), as it sezises up the bowels. Well I'm blood type O, and have IBS. It was hard, but I decided to give up gluten and dairy (as I'm allergic anyway). As I'm typing this, it's been about a 3 weeks since I gave up gluten and a month and a half without dairy, 2 weeks ago I started feeling much better. Sure I still get bad days and I'm not bouncy with energy 24/7. But I've noticed a change, a shift towards being healthy, something that hasn't occured since Christmas. It's been difficult as some of my gluten free products haven't exactly been the best tasting things ever, and I have to bring my own lunch in as gluten-free doesn't apply to the cafes/sandwich bars/restaurants near my work, however it's all for the greater good.
The WahWah Views
The main reason my last blog entry was so tight was because my review section was so big! Origianlly I was going to only post one review to compensate, but I got a new game via Amy (a game 1 week before it's offical release! - a first in my blog) and decided to include it here as well! As promised none of them are a survival horror (yay!) unfortunetly one is not a happy review. Let's start on a high shall we? First up; a review of the up and coming Sega Superstars Tennis!
Title: Sega Superstars Tennis Genre: Party, Sports Platform: Wii, DS, Playstation 2, Playstation 3, Xbox360 Certificate: 7+ Rating: 4/5
“Sega Superstars Tennis” is basically the next level in Wii Sports Tennis, it takes all the best bits, removes away the bad, adds many more elements and mixes it with huge cast of colourful Sega characters.
You have a total of 16 characters (8 need to be unlocked) to choose from; the characters range from the popular Sonic the Hedgehog, to the newly revived NiGHTS and ‘hasn’t been seen in a decade’ Alex Kidd. If you’ve ever played a Sega game or owned a Sega console in your life, you’ll be very happy to see many elements dedicated to those characters. Such as Sonic’s Green Hill Zone court has the television with a ring inside, the chao cheering from the side lines and Sonic Adventure 2 music playing in the background. You can tell Sega had its fans at heart whilst developing this game.
The gameplay is very well thought out as you have much more control over the ball and racket compared to Wii Sports. Instead of just moving the remote to register a hit (like in Wii Sports) you have a variety of moves that allow you to input more strategy into the game and it feels more life like. In addition you have the ‘superstar’ moves, whilst playing tennis a gold star is found underneath your character; if you perform a good move or progressively win it starts to glow. When it glows you can press the A + B buttons to activate ‘superstar’ mode. In this mode your character can perform moves that make it trickier for you opponent to win; such as Amigo summons maracas on the other side to distract the opponent. This feature can be turned off if you prefer just to play straight forward tennis.
You can play with either the classic controller, the wii remote sideways (both use buttons and the d-pad to play), the wii remote held upwards (like you use in Wii Sports) and with the nunchuck. Each input method has its own advantages; for example with just the wii remote you only control the racket and the computer moves the character for you, with the nunchuck attached you have complete control over the character’s movements and the tennis racket.
The graphics are good; the character designs and level layouts are nicely portrayed, though they don’t reach the level of ‘Mario & Sonic at the Olympics’ or ‘Super Mario Galaxy’, they’re better than most wii titles.
The graphics and details capture the essences of the original levels, such as Green Hill Zone
There are 4 different modes of game play; Match mode is basically the same structure as Wii Sports Tennis, you can play with/against the computer or friends in singles or doubles game. Tournament mode allows you to enter a competition, again with the computer or your mates to see who the best tennis player is. The Games section has multiple mini games, each representing a different Sega game. You can play by yourself or with friends to beat the high score.
Superstars mode is where single players will get the most out of this game; you have 16 areas all representing a different Sega game, only 6 are open at first. These include Sonic the Hedgehog, Super Monkey Ball and Golden Axe. In each world you have 10 missions to complete, all involving themes from each Sega game using tennis to complete each mission. You are graded on how well you perform and some missions unlock new worlds, characters and songs from each game’s soundtrack. Most of the missions are very well thought out and range from quite easy to very challenging. This includes beating a horde of zombies from ‘House of the Dead’ (called ‘Curien Mansion’ in this game) with tennis balls, or aiming coloured balls onto graffiti on the other side of the “Jet Set Radio” court. However there are a few missions that feel very out of place, the best example is the Sonic based missions where you simply move your character to collect rings on the field whilst avoiding enemy attacks. Despite the game giving you instructions on how to serve and the character a tennis racket – you don’t use it at all. If I wanted to move Sonic around collecting rings and dodging enemies I would’ve purchase Sonic the Hedgehog on the virtual console! Fortunately these types of games only count for a small portion of the missions; the majority are clever and highly enjoyable.
The major element that drags this game from a 5 star to a 4 is the computer AI. It’s very unpredictable in an unfortunate way, one minute the computer will play tennis like Serena Williams, the next it will stand there gawking at the ball as it flies past them. This problem doesn’t lie in the Match or Tournament mode as you can adjust the settings, it mainly lies in ‘Superstar’ mode, so some missions involving computer controlled characters can be a doodle and others can be too challenging for new players.
The last fault of this title is that the Wii version is the only version that lacks online gaming. So if online gaming is vital to you, I recommend you pick an alternative version of this game.
Overall this is a well put together game and enjoyable for a wide range of gamers. Not only it is quite enjoyable for both single gamers and those with many mates; it has many high-quality features that make this title very worth while. If you want a new challenge that you cannot get in Wii Sports, this game offers it. Or if you dreamed about having your favourite Sega characters together in one disc, you won’t be disappointed.
Title: The Legend of Spyro: The Eternal Night Genre: Platform, Action Platform: Playstation 2, Wii, Nintendo DS, Game Boy Advance Certificate: 7+ Rating: 1.5/5
Let me paint you a picture; you’ve just re-loaded from a checkpoint for what seems like the millionth time. You check your ‘upgrade’ screen; all breath powers are good to go, you check your health/magic bars, full up to the brim. Now you are ready to take on the enemy! You climb up the hill for the Nth time and kill 2 warthogs that come charging at you. You continue upwards to kill 3 apes and 2 more hogs; you manage to survive (barely). Now at the top of the hill, ready to face the 9 apes that attacked you relentlessly and killed you before, you manage (with a bit of luck) to come out of the battle, this time a winner. Just when you think it’s time for another check point, or at least a breather from the enemies, no, another dozen apes come flying in. Along with their ‘daddy’, a huge ape that, with previous experience, can kill a fully healed Spyro in 2 hits. With no means of healing yourself or re-filling your magic, the apes destroy Spyro in a matter of seconds. You are revived to the spot you started at (again) and Sparx suddenly says; “Hay, try to not to die again!”. With high blood pressure, built up anger and completely frustrated, the only logical response is to shout at the TV screen and say; “WHAT THE HELL DO YOU THINK I’VE BEEN DOING FOR THE PAST 2 HOURS?!”
“The Eternal Night” is the sequel to the first ‘Legend of Spyro’ title; “A New Beginning”. The ‘Legend of Spyro’ is a trilogy that ‘revises’ the character Spyro, from a cute child-friendly dragon to a combat, all action hero. The new games were met with mixed reaction, from fans they cried out for the old Spyro while game reviewers welcomed the new change and platform-based game play. Though I loved Spyro since he was introduced on the Playstation and hold the games quite highly today, the ‘formula’ of gem collecting and cheesy cartoon-ish baddies was starting to wear thin by the time he came to the PS2. When ‘A New Beginning’ was released I was hesitant, missing the lovable innocent dragon, but I thought the first instalment in the ‘Legend of Spyro’ was quite enjoyable. Nothing ground breaking but I’d hoped that this game would be the starting platform onto something greater. I eagerly waited for the sequel, I added ‘Eternal Night’ onto my Christmas list, I insert the disc in my PS2, and by the end of it I was ready to smash it into tiny pieces!
‘The Eternal Night’ picks up directly where ‘A New Beginning’ ends; Spyro has lost all of his powers after the battle with Cynder and stopping the Dark Master from resurrecting. But The Dark Master isn’t about to give up yet, as the Ape King has his eyes set on ‘The Well of Souls’ and plans to resurrect him on the night of Eternal Darkness. Can Spyro regain his powers and stop the ape king?
The controls are a direct copy as the previous instalment; jump, glide and attacks are allocated to the same buttons. The game relies heavily on combat to complete the game, you have a choice of either melee attacks or a choice of 4 elemental breaths; fire, ice, electricity and earth. However unlike the previous game, the elemental attacks have undergone a small change. Instead of just having one button to breath a fire and another to unleash a special attack (that wasn’t much different from the other elementals) they now all have their own specialities. For example Spyro can now turn into an electric whirlwind or unleash an ‘earth bubble’ that can send the enemies flying! Or Spyro can perform an ice-effused tail whip that temporarily slows down enemies. So basically combat isn’t as repetitive as before, it still dominates the game but finding new ways to dispose of enemies is somewhat fun and creative.
Or, if the elementals aren’t enough for you, ‘Eternal Night’ introduces the new ability, ‘Dragon Time’. It’s basically the now over-used ‘bullet time’ ability, after pressing the button to activate it you have a limited time in which the world around Spyro slows down considerably. This ability is mainly to help Spyro progress in the game by slowing down fast platforms that he has to reach, but it also helps as back up in some boss battles and enemy encounters.
Despite the controls being lifted from ‘A New Beginning’ a problem has somehow generated from development; Spyro can perform a ‘double jump’ just like before, which helps Spyro glide from a greater height. However the space you get to press the appropriate button twice in order to active it is very small. After pressing once, you have not even a second to react and press again; otherwise Spyro will start to glide at a lower height, often resulting in not reaching the platform required and trying again. Once the problem is picked up you learn to work around it but it’s extremely frustrating to compensate for this when you’d rather be concentrating on playing and having fun, rather than what’s going on with the buttons!
Like the prequel, Spyro cannot increase his maximum health or magic throughout the game, but you can increase Spyro’s breath power via the upgrade menu which uses blue gems picked up from enemies and crystals. Though blue gems are harder to come by as the blue crystals are hidden for most of the game and are not always given when enemies are defeated. Therefore increasing Spyro’s breath powers is not as easy as the previous game, often leaving a weak Spyro up against much stronger enemies.
The enemies are ugly, strong and very annoying
The graphics have not improved since ‘A New Beginning’, at all. Sure some of Spyro’s fury attacks and moves are performed in another way so they now look different but in no way does this game push the PS2’s boundaries. The character designs have been re-used, level layouts have been re-structured but offer no variation and the same colour palette has been used from the previous instalment. Considering now that the PS2 is at the end of its life cycle, Krome Studios were incredibly lazy in this department.
Like pretty much everything else from this title, the music score re-uses many tracks from the first game. A few new ones have been composed (such as the sweeping out-of-place ballad sung during the credits) but there’s nothing there that will strike you and it doesn’t bring anything to the game, if ‘Eternal Night’ was silent throughout you probably wouldn’t notice the difference. The SFX, again recycled from ‘A New Beginning’, are clear enough and do the job required.
Elijah Wood and Gary Oldman return to reprise their roles of Spyro and Ignitus respectively, also Billy West (voice of Fry in Futurama) and Martin Jarvis join the cast, despite being ‘big name actors’ they don’t live up to their fame. It’s quite clear that the actors had little direction; several times I’m sure that a particular line in the script was meant to be sarcastic, yet Elijah Wood says the line in an upbeat friendly tone – no sarcasm to be heard. Compared to their performances in the previous game, the actors were obviously not warming up to this instalment, to be fair though, the script wasn't exactly a piece of art.
Where most of the frustration from this game comes from is the ridiculous difficulty level! Sure, the puzzles and concept is very easy to grasp and combat is basically button bashing, that’s not the problem. The problem lies with the battles themselves and that the unforgiving controls can lead to so many character deaths! I cannot begin to count how many times Spyro was absurdly out numbered in battle, or had to face bosses that were capable of killing Spyro in literally 2 hits! It’s just unbelievable; it’s almost like Krome Studios at first intended for Spyro to be ultra powerful and have all his powers from the first game, therefore having enemies’ ultra powerful too. But then changed their minds about Spyro towards the end of development and forgot about the enemies! The situation explained in my opening paragraph is one in many, due to this, player’s will most likely abuse “Dragon Time” to stay alive or pray that they’ll get enough fury gems to perform the ultra powerful attack and finish the battle quickly. To add insult to injury, Spyro can be harmed while being flung across the fielded by the previous enemy’s attack, while enemies become invincible when they are knocked down, only to get back up again with increased health.
This is not helped with the lack of check points. The previous game, when Spyro died, it restarted the player to the beginning of the section he happened to have died in. This helped with some of the tougher baddies as Spyro was able simply to tackle them straight away instead of ploughing through the level leading up to them. However in ‘The Eternal Night’, check points are far and few, combining with unfair battles and fragile controls can lead players to repeat the same sections many times over. Another annoyance is certain check points occur just before a cut scene, if you happen to die you have to watch the cut scene AGAIN! It gives no option to skip so you end up watching the same scene over and over again if you happen to be facing a difficult boss! It’s completely unnecessary and ridiculous!
I’ve played computer games for a very long time, sure some titles are quite difficult and yet are still enjoyable, and no game should be completely dismissed due to difficulty. However when the difficulty is raised so high that defeating enemies relies more on luck than skill, and your character is killed numerous times for no good reason, the fun dies very quickly. Especially when the rest of the game is no different to its older counterpart, only the most loyal Spyro fans will see this game to the end. The title is aimed at children, the age rating is 7+, yet I cannot begin to imagine how a 7 year old would be able to complete this game without wanting to scream out in frustration continuously.
Despite the horrible game play, ‘The Eternal Night’ comes with means to keep the player coming back for more. Unlockables include in-game artwork and mini games; these can be viewed if a player collects a certain amount of items throughout the game. There are feathers, green masks and orange masks, many hidden and require exploration in order to find them. With over 30 features and 5 masks of each colour, there’s plenty scattered throughout the story, the question is however would you really want to go looking for them when the main game is as awful as it is? Many of the ‘platform’ game genre elements come into play when looking for these items, these include precise jump timing and climbing obstacles. However a hefty number of the items happen to be located over bottomless pits of doom or any other obstacle that results in death if not performed correctly, and considering the control scheme, death is a likely occurrence. If you have happened to defeat an enemy that took you ages to do and you are not sure whether you’ve progressed enough in the game to reach a check point, you’ll be constantly asking yourself’; “Is it really worth risk dying and doing the whole of this section again, all for one feather?”. Sadly, the answer will most likely be a no.
After the first ‘Legend of Spyro’ game, I didn’t have high expectations, but I did have SOME expectations! Even though a few very small elements that were improved from the first game, they were overwhelmed by so much that went wrong or were simply copied from the previous title, luckily the actual game is short in length (excluding all the times to re-load after dying). I can only hope that the 3rd instalment, (‘The Darkest Hour’, slated for a late 2008 release) learns from this title’s mistakes and delivers a game that’s not only enjoyable and worth while but playable! Whether you enjoyed ‘A New Beginning’ or not, this game is not worth your time.
I can only recommend this game if you; A) Like the sound of a dying dragon B) Get a kick out of losing constantly, or C) Are a die hard fan of Spyro.
Poor Spyro, come back when you’ve dumped Krome Studios!
Song of the Blog
This section really took a beating last entry, I had to rely on another site to provide the lyrics to the song I posted! Not good at all.
The media player is currently playing Utada Hikaru's latest single; Heart Station. If you've read my blog long enough you'll know well enough that Utada Hikaru is one of my favourite artists, and my favourite Japanese artist. Her new album is due for release in Japan on Wednesday 19th March 2008, from the singles she's released so far and the information thats been released about the other tracks on the album - it's going to be a great album I'm sure!
I've provided the Romaji lyrics below and the English translation, both are provided by Sakuramochi on this site.

Rainy day that chills the skin
The two of us, not believing in this separation The radio was playing inside the car Saying goodbye is meaningless If we're able to meet again someday Don't you think it'll be a beautiful thing? Are you able to hear my voice? 1 o'clock at night, on heart station A dial that doesn't need tuning A secret hertz Are you receiving the frequencies of my heart? Heart station of sinners A secret only God knows I miss you... (Can you hear me? Just tell me one thing)
(If you can hear me, say something) The more I think I need to forget The more these thoughts remain Even if we are apart You are right here In the middle of my heart I thought I heard your voice 1 o'clock at night, on heart station Two pulses, always beating somewhere Are you receiving the frequencies of my heart? Heart station of lovers We're receiving a request again tonight "I Love You" Are you able to hear my voice? 1 o'clock at night, on heart station A secret hertz that still connects us Are you receiving the frequencies of my heart? I hit a new high on views before Christmas! 108 views on my blog! Woohoo!
Recently I've had random happens, or thoughts if you will, since my last entry. I've affectionally labeled those thoughts under 'Random Crap!' below, feel free to read if you're interested. If not skip down to my life update, or if you came here for reviews scroll further down!
Random Crap!
Life Update
Unfortunetly due to space I had to cut this section short (DAMN MSN SPACES TEXT LIMITATIONS), which is a shame since I know most of it's boring but I typed up a few interestings things here and there including my thoughts on the new Camden and Greenwich, if you are interested, you can read it on my barely used live journal account here.
Overall January was pretty much same-old same-old on the work front, health wise I've not been at my best and mentally it's been hard as several people I care deeply for have had a rough month as well, so I've been worried about them. Plus several times I've doubted that I'm ever going to recover from my food poisening (no change there!), but hopefully 2008 will improve as the year progresses. Besides, my new 2008 calender opened up on Hiro Nakamura!
What a better way to start the year than a smile from Hiro? Hopefully he is a sign this year will be a good one!

Today's reviews are dominated by computer games (when aren't they?). Including short reviews for my current Wii collection, which consist of 5 games and a long review for another survivial horror! I promise my next long review will not be a survival horror for those who are tired of them yet. As previously stated you can see more of my reviews at amazon.co.uk.
![]() Title: Super Mario Galaxy Genre: Platform, Adventure Platform: Wii Certificate: 3+ Nunchuck Controller Needed?: Yes Rating: 4/5 Synopsis: Every 100 years, a comet flies past the planet, dropping star bits as it passes and involves the planet in a white light. On this day, a festival occurs and Mario plans to go to the festival with his special one, Peach. However as he makes his way to Peach’s castle, Bowser decides to ruin this special event and captures Peach, to use her as part of his plans to take over the universe!
Wow! What can I say! I can see why it’s flying off the selves just like the Wii is! To be honest, I’m not the biggest Mario fan, I’ve been more of a Sonic gal myself; my brother is the one who has 100% completed Super Mario 64 and Luigi’s Mansion, plus he insists on playing Mario Party most of the time. Mario has a huge legacy and even though I’ve not been that interested in him, I was intrigued by this title. It’s currently the most played game in my household at the moment, with both me and my brother playing with mum supporting! The graphics are literally flawless, the graphics made me wide-eyes on “Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games” but this title tops that instantly, you can see all the textures of each surface, such as the shine on wet floors and the rough-ness on a wooden planet – they really are gorgeous! They are loads of fun and varied levels that are also diverse in difficulty to make both newbies and hard core gamers happy; such as finding hidden items, racing various characters, completing a level with only one life and collecting 100 purple coins! There are lots to do and when you think it’s over, there’s even more fun to behold. The music is also brilliantly composed, it captures many elements from previous Mario scores and adds its own spin to them as well. I think that the ‘cuteness’ of some of the new characters and the story may ‘put off’ some players, but if you can believe that a fat Italian plumber can fight off a gigantic dim-witted dinosaur to save his all-pink and thrills ‘damsel in distress’ girlfriend, why not a cute star baby that can transform into planets? The controls also seem easy and fluid at first, but sometimes when you walk upside down on a planet the control can reverse suddenly, and some of Mario’s power ups (such as the spring and flying Mario) can really prove to be a challenge, more often frustrating! Originally I gave Mario Galaxy 4.5/5, but after finishing the game and unlocking a new mode I've dropped it to 4, reason being is that the new mode allows you to play as a different character - but apart from being a slightly better jumper and alternating the difficulty of some of the hidden stars, there's no difference between Mario's and the other character's modes! Which is a shame since with the new character they could've done many funny and interesting things with the dialogue, story, everything! Yet they didn't...wasted opportunity. Overall though, a must have title for any Wii owner.
Title: Mario Party 8 Genre: Party, Board Game Platform: Wii Certificate: 3+ Nunchuck Controller Needed?: No Rating: 3/5
Anyone who follows Mario would know of this series, for those who don’t, the ‘Mario Party’ series is basically a party game that features all the lovable characters from the Mario series onto a computer game version of a board game. The players have to collect coins within each board and purchase stars, the one with the highest amount of stars after certain amount of turns wins the game. Most of the titles in the series have very little different content from each other, so far I’ve played 2, 4 and 5 of the series and the only major difference between them is the selection of mini games and graphics. Is Mario Part 8 any different? No in short. But it has brought forward some nice elements I’d like to see in the future; on the other hand I’d like it to get rid off problems that have existed since the series began!
The graphics are nice enough, shows off the textures of the water and other surfaces nicely enough but compared to my current Wii collection it is one of the weakest, being less detailed and not exactly pushing the console’s boundaries. There are added boards, though look identical to previous games, the rules have slightly been altered. So instead of purchasing stars you have to find the appropriate character to fork them over or you need to invest in hotels to come out on top - I like this variation of gameplay outside the mini games, instead of just wandering around the board buying stars. I’m also fond of the less screen time the CPU characters get whilst playing, in previous games you had to witness them make decisions on the board, play mini games, etc, though we still witness the mini games the whole ‘board’ playing is reduced – a step in the absolutely RIGHT direction! Hopefully the next title will take it even further. The selections of mini games are a hit and miss; at a glance they appear very much the same compared to previous selections. Although some of the games make good use of the Wii remote in fun ways, other times they seem to be lifted off the Gamecube capabilities. Going from shaking the Wii remote up and down to pressing down on the d-pad seems quite odd; in addition the controls and rules for some of the games are a bit peculiar as well. For example on a previous 2 player racing game one player controls the speed whilst the other manoeuvres the vehicle, in the racing game on this title, BOTH characters control the direction of the vehicle, which leads to over-doing a turn whilst playing, so it’s quite unbalanced. If you feel the whole gameplay has been stretched as far as it can go and hope this latest title will prove you wrong, don’t bother forking out the money as it doesn’t. One player action can get tiresome, multiplayer can be fun at times, but with many other party games available on the wii that perform much better than Mario Party 8, this title is only for die-hard fans!
Title: Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games Genre: Sports Party Game Platform: Wii and DS Certificate: 3+ Nunchuck Controller Needed?: Yes for Some Events Rating: 4/5
When I read about this game coming out on Wikipedia, I had to rub my eyes; I thought it was a cruel, mean joke! For years I’ve read in mags such as “Offical Nintendo Magazine” where people have written in saying why Mario is better than Sonic or visa versa, now two major companies plus two of the most famous mascots in gaming history have joined forces to make this very brilliant game! It’s probably one of the best marketing techniques ever, why decide between a Sonic or Mario game when you can play both characters on the same disc? It's fantastic! So why have I not rated it 5/5? The reasons are quite simple and probably could’ve been avoided if they were picked up before by the developers – but no game is perfect eh? First of all, although you have a wide range of playable characters from both series, several characters that would’ve been a great addition have been left out. For example I cannot think as to why Blaze the Cat was chosen over Rouge the Bat, when Rouge has proved to be more popular and in more previous Sonic titles. Also, even though you can unlock different events and difficulties of other events, you cannot unlock anymore characters – that was a wasted opportunity! I mean come on I would’ve loved to see Boo race against Shadow! Or Toad against Tails! Such a shame really… Secondly; in several of the events, if you do not perform a ‘jump’ or ‘throw’ correctly or do so too soon you often see the “Foul” text upon the screen, which is fair enough. However if you perform a triple jump and you get a “good” rating for each jump only to be told at the very end that your first jump was an inch over the ‘jump’ line, it is very annoying! It would’ve been better and nicer if they notify you as you make the foul jump rather than leading you to believe that you’ve broken the world record and actually end up forfeiting your turn altogether! And last but not least; it’s so bloody tiring! Seriously I played for 2 days and my arms were ready to fall off! And doing the ‘dream race’ made my heart pound harder than I’ve ever heard it before! Its bags full of fun but if you’re ill or if your arms are still hurting from the previous game, you’ll not exactly be in a hurry to play again.
On the whole there’s enough to play by yourself or with friends, plus the brilliant graphics and enjoyable gameplay to keep all Mario and Sonic fans happy! If Wii Sports is not enough for you, try this!!
Title: Sonic and the Secret Rings Genre: Adventure, Action, Fantasy, Platform Platform: Wii Certificate: 7+ Nunchuck Controller Needed?: No Rating: 2.5/5 Synopsis: One day, while looking at a book on Arabian nights, he accidentally frees a genie by the name of Shahra. She tells of an evil being known as Erazor Djinn, who is wiping out the pages of the book in order to make the world of Arabian nights his own! Asking for Sonic’s help, he is sucked into the book and must battle this new foe before it’s too late.
I was very reluctant to give the game a 2.5 out of 5 rating, originally I contemplated a 2 but I eventually settled for 2.5 since it is a Sonic game and I had to give the benefit of the doubt since I haven’t completed it yet. I have loved and pretty much followed Sonic’s progress from the Sega Mega Drive to now the Wii, I love both the 2D platformers on the 16-bit console and the 3D adventures on the Gamecube, when I heard he had moved to the Wii and also the PS3 – I aimed to make sure that the Sonic titles would be one of the first games I get for each console. At first, this game showed promise but after several attempts it’s proved to be more of a chore rather than an enjoyable game! I know it’s an early title for the Wii but the control system is awful! Some of the controls (such as back step) don’t work and others need an extreme reaction to make them take effect. For example I had to literally throw the Wii remote at the senor bar to register a homing attack, with most times failing to and resulting in death! And even if you succeed the lock-on doesn’t always work so you end up plunging to your doom anyway! I’m sure that this is the game that caused all the property damage and physical injuries to players when the Wii was first realised because it was the only way to make most of the controls effective! Plus I hate the fact that Sonic is constantly moving, you have to hold a button down to stop him. The speed he walks and not knowing how to stop him at the start of the game is enough to strike fear into any new player’s hearts. Controls aside the way the whole game is layout is tiresome, instead of the whole ‘learning curve’ at the beginning being all one level, each move has it’s own ‘page’ in the ‘storybook’ (also know as section) of the adventure menu, it’s annoying having to select each mission, do it, come out and have to select the next one when a simple fade away to the next would have been much smoother. The only positive things I can say are the voice acting is ok, the ‘comic panel’ story telling is interesting and the graphics are pleasable. I think this will be one of the last titles I complete of my current Wii collection; it’s no where near as fun, enjoyable or as easy to play as previous titles from the Sonic collection. Don’t get me wrong, I think that performing Sonic’s moves and attacks using the remote is a great idea, it makes you feel part of the action, but when it only works 10% of the time, THAT’S not a good idea!
Title: Tomb Raider: Anniversary Genre: Action, Adventure, Platform Platform: Playstation 2, PSP, Xbox 360, Wii, Windows PC Certificate: 16+ Nunchuck Controller Needed?: Yes Rating: 3.5/5 Synopsis: Lara Croft has been hired by Jacqueline Natla to find one of the three pieces of an artefact known as the Atlantean Scion. The offer intrigues Lara as both her and her father have been searching for this artefact for a long while. As she travels to the ice land of Peru and journeys deep into the ruins, it seems Natla has something up her sleeve…
I’ve not been an avid follower of Lara Croft; I remember playing the original Tomb Raider on the Playstation that my friend lent me. I got stuck on the dinosaur but had to give back the game to my friend who eventually moved away and I wasn’t that interested to hire it out from my local Blockbuster at the time. Sure I admire the character since she’s hot, British and has a cool career, but I only really purchased this title since I liked the advert on TV and it was the only title on the Woolworths self that looked enjoyable.
The graphics are lifted from the PS2 version (according to a review I’ve read), which look nice and are detailed enough but a little ‘upgrade’ would’ve been nice, to reduce some of the glitches that I’ve noticed. The music score is nice enough to present the atmosphere, and the main theme on the title screen is soothing just like the original version on the PS1. I like the structure of the levels and the thought-required puzzles involved, although sometimes you perform moves that don’t always go according to plan, the game is quite enjoyable throughout. (I’m also very happy that I’ve finally got passed that stupid dinosaur! Yay!) Like it says on the box, the Wii version does have some exclusive features; such as the ‘rubbing awards’, meaning you uncover ancient tablets in your surroundings and some puzzles have been altered to incorporate the Wii’s special features. I also like the ‘interactive’ cut scenes, so instead of just watching Lara back flip, grab her guns and shoot the daylights out of the pack of wolves; you get given commands to shake your controls so that you feel part of the action. The other versions of this game do have interactive cut scenes but require button combinations; I think movements are easier and more fun to perform with physical movements than punching in buttons. The biggest drawback of this title is the controls; first of all it relies too much on the ‘cursor’ of the Wii remote itself. The cursor is used to aim your gun, aim your flashlight, control the camera…so most of Lara’s moves, which is actually a bit tiresome. Plus also, for several parts of the game particular moves do not work unless executed in a certain way. Too many times have I jumped Lara towards a pole, Lara goes through the pole. I jump Lara towards the ledge to grab on; Lara fails to see the platform and falls to her doom. I jump Lara and release the grapple towards a hook, the grapple doesn’t grab and again I hear Lara’s spine snap in half. There are long periods of gameplay where it all works fine but when you reach a section when nothing seems to go your way and you’ve happen to have picked up items in the progress you have to pick them up again when restarting at the check point! Another area where controllers are against you is during combat. On the PS2 version, all you have to do is hold L1 to lock onto the target, and no matter where your enemy goes your gun is sure to damage them when you fire. However on the Wii version the Z button (on the nunchuck) brings out Lara’s guns and locks onto the wii cursor, meaning that you’ll hit the enemy if the wii cursor is aimed at he enemy. This seems fine at first and somewhat fun but when the enemy moves or you get knocked over or the camera angle changes or all of the above, you have to re-aim with your remote or re position the camera and hope the enemy stands still long enough for you to shoot, it also doesn’t help if you don’t have a sturdy hand! This form of control may make you feel like you’re part of the action but it also gives you an unfair advantage compared to PS2 players. Eventually combat becomes easier to handle but the first boss will put most players into frustration. Thankfully combat is a small part of the game compared to the rest, and when the controls are on your side, the game is fun to play. The only other nick-pick thing is the subtitles, they are quite small which is fine if you sit quite close to the television but if you’re sitting at a healthy distance you end up squinting your eyes. Also when characters are talking, instead of saying “Lara: blah bah, Larson: blah, blah”, all the text rolls into one, no names are mentioned, so it looks like only one person is talking. It looks strange if you can’t hear what the characters are saying and have to refer to the text (like I was the other day when the house happened to be quite noisy) and in addition it looks lazy.
I’m quite glad I’ve picked up this title now; despite the controls I’m quite enjoying this title. I also know that once I’ve completed the game I have several things to unlock on my second playthrough – a good reason to come back to this game. Whether Lara Croft is a good friend or a complete stranger to you, there are lots of elements here that will appeal to many gamers. Hire out if you’re unsure but I can guarantee, it’s worth the money!
Title: Rule of Rose Genre: Survival Horror Platform: Playstation 2 Certificate: 16+ Rating: 3.5/5
Rule of Rose is a funny old game, it’s one of the few titles that managed to hit the headlines in major game sites and newspapers before it even hit the selves. Not because it was highly anticipated, not because it presented any ground-breaking graphics or gameplay, but because it cause quite a controversy. Before the game was available for pre-order, the game caused an up roar with its supposedly very violent gameplay involving children, under-age lesbian themes and animal cruelty. It became such a concern that several officials decided to not rest until the game was banned from their country! As a result, it was eventually withdraw from the UK, New Zealand and Australia; however it was released in other parts of Europe as well as America and Japan. Was the ‘up roar’ over nothing? If anything banning a game just gives the game more publicity and surely a ‘game’ cannot contain such inappropriate themes? I can safely say they are not entirely correct; though there is animal cruelty and children being violent towards each other – it keeps it to the minimum and shields most of it from the audience (but just enough to in plant the fear into the player’s hearts). The underage ‘lesbian’ theme is only present in one small chapter, it’s not sexual, and it’s not part of the main story. So did the ban make the relevant countries miss out on a great horror title? Or was the ban worth all the hassle?
The story of ‘Rule of Rose’ is set in 1930s England and revolves around Jennifer – a poor, unlucky 19 year old whose parents have passed away in an airship accident. She is sent away to an orphanage where she is tormented by the Aristocrat Club: a group of young girls who must be presented with a gift for each month in order to prevent any further torment. Can Jennifer find her way out of this nightmare?
The story is unlike any other title I’ve come across, unlike some games where the story is spoon fed, this game is quite cryptic. Not all of the major story elements are presented if you just play the game with minimal exploring, many hidden ‘documents’ plus some character interaction helps shred light in many grey areas that the game hides. Unless you invest time and energy into uncovering the whole story you’ll find yourself in the dark and very confused at the end of the game. This is not necessary a bad thing, sometimes being ‘spoon fed’ a plot can leave little to the imagination and patronising, unfortunately this brilliant story line is combined with many horrible game elements that will make many gamers not care enough to advance through.
‘Rule of Rose’ has a decent size cast, all that contribute towards the horror the unlucky girl is forced to endure. The Aristocrat club consist of; Diane, known as the ‘strong willed princess’ and the Duchess of the club, Meg or known by her rank as ‘Baroness’, as well as intelligent but inflexible. Then there’s the ‘cold hearted princess’, Eleanor and Amanda, who was the lowest rank of the Aristocrat Club until Jennifer showed up! The enemies that Jennifer must endure are all children as well, many like zombies – being faceless and big eyes completely black. Others are animals that brutally attack you with weapons or children in paper bags. All of the characters personalities and the enemies play their own little role into weaving the terror into the game, also their need to reject, torment or kill Jennifer makes the player feel for the poor girl and create the surrounding that she is very alone against the darkness.
Welcome to the Aristocrat Club!
The layout of the game is quite interesting and will lure you in long enough to see its flaws, instead of basic narrating or character interaction, the plot is advanced by small ‘storytelling’ blurbs on the screen, whether its before you speak to a character or before an action is taken place. For example when speaking to the character Diane, the blurb comes up and says; “No matter what the unlucky girl said to her, the strong-willed Princess would only gaze lethargically. Asleep or awake, the girl was alone. What a sad, unlucky girl”. At first these story telling moments make the game move slowly but it’s very absorbing, it’s put together very well and brings forth an atmosphere not found in any other game. The game also incorporates small ‘fairy tales’ that reflect certain chapters of the plot, the kids handwriting and doodles combined with the disturbing story (often resulting in death) in each book is enough to raise some eyebrows, but it all plays brilliantly into the horror that surrounds ‘Rule of Rose’. Unfortunately due to the strong fantasy element, it’s very hard to actually get ‘scared’ at what you see. Sure, many elements are ‘disturbing’, it hits that barrier many times but never once was I scared or felt my heart ponding, considering its marketed as a ‘Survival Horror’ it’s a shame really.
The graphics…are like a cheap box of chocolates. At first they look nicely presented in a detailed box and the chocolate looks delicious. But after taking your first bite you’re left with a bittersweet after-taste. ‘Rule of Rose’ opens up with a beautiful opening movie, the characters come to life as you begin the game and the surroundings look very detailed, they bring out the 1930s England period well. However as the game progresses it’s not so flawless, including Jennifer’s weapon going through enemies and walls, Jennifer walking through her dog companion, characters moving very awkwardly and becoming less detailed as the game progresses – like as if the game designers got lazy later on in development. This game was released in 2006, the same year as Final Fantasy 12, and 1 year after Haunting Ground, yet ‘Rule of Rose’ fails to surpass any of them on the visual department. If you’re looking for a game to demonstrate the best PS2 graphical capabilities, this is not the game to pick.
The music on the other hand is very well composed, consisting mainly of strings instruments and a piano on several tracks. Yutaka Minobe brings forth the emotion and a ‘human’ element to this title in a very intriguing way, the theme song ‘A Love Suicide’ is a wonderful composition to open up the game. Though some of the tracks can get slightly repetitive, along with the plot is remains one of the highlights of the game. In addition most Survival Horror titles tend to have ‘atmosphere’ tracks rather than actual music like ‘Rule of Rose’ provides, it makes a nice change. The character voices are a pleasure to hear, all of the British accents are done very well and none of the actors slip out of character at all. However the game didn’t give them much of an opportunity to shine. Though there is dialogue in cut scenes, outside of them it seemed like they couldn’t make up their mind whether they ought to be used or not. For example speaking to one character, she’ll voice everything from the subtitles, speak to another and only the first line will be spoken, speak to someone else and the character will only make sounds to demonstrate the mood they are in (such as giggles, or angry sighs). It’s unbalanced for unnecessary reasons.
The game’s major criticism comes from the game play itself. Who wants to play a game if they can’t actually play it? Even with an intriguing storyline no gamer would want to put themselves through tantrums, annoyance, anguish and frustration to see what’s at the end of the tunnel. Unfortunately this game will deliver all of the above, even if you are known for having extreme patience, ‘Rule of Rose’ cannot hide the fact that the gameplay ultimately sucks.
Let’s start with the combat controls, or lack of them shall we say? It seems the developers, taking into account that Jennifer is classified as a ‘timid, poor, unlucky girl’, decided to play the ‘timid’ card too hard. Jennifer can use various objects from throughout the game as a weapon including forks, kitchen knives and pipes, she attacks by locking on using the R1 button and X to attack. At first you may think ‘did I press the X button at all?’ since Jennifer is SO timid that she winces when swinging her weapon and barely lets it leave her side. Even if you do get a decent weapon with a decent range and she manages to swing it, the next obstacle is to actually HIT the target. Too many times the weapon goes through the enemy or fails to hit it at all, or worst Jennifer aims at an enemy on the floor that’s no longer a threat to her, whilst the enemies can attack her from miles away and with a much higher accuracy! Considering that many enemy encounters Jennifer is severally out numbered, this is unacceptable. Sure not all enemy encounters are necessary to advance in the game, and the bosses are few and far between, but it’s the combat that will ultimately tear your hair out and will make you think twice before continuing if you happen to get killed (and believe me, you will!). To contribute to this, many healing items are hidden, as are the saving points, and bosses tend to have a hefty amount of life points that require a lot of hits from Jennifer to kill. Ultimately it fails to conjure any fun; instead it draws the attention away from the ‘scary’ moments and motivating plot.
Even WITH a weapon, the combat is tiresome.
Other hiccups on the controls become apparent when the camera angle changes, the controls suddenly reverse. One point the camera is in front of Jennifer and pressing ’up’ makes her walk towards the camera; suddenly the camera’s behind her and ‘up’ registers her as walking in the opposite direction she was just going. Irritating if you’re to run away from the enemy and you instead end up colliding with them!
The game is often compared to ‘Haunting Ground’, mainly due to the addition of a dog companion to assist the main character, but that is where similarities end. Your canine companion in ‘Rule of Rose’, Brown, is not used in the same way as Hewie in ‘Haunting Ground’. Hewie was mainly used for combat purposes and the main character had much more control over the dog. However Brown does not participate in combat, though he can distract the enemy in some situations, he mainly serves as a guide to help advance in the game. In order for Jennifer to find gifts for the aristocrat club, she must use items connected to it (in some shape for form) by using Brown to sniff the object and follow the trail to wherever it takes him. While it’s simple to operate and works well most of the time, it can get very repetitive, in fact all you need is for Brown to sniff on the item provided continuously and you can complete the game quite swiftly. However due to a lot of back tracking and very little skill needed, it’s uninspired. Despite this the game replies heavily on Brown as he is also needed to find hidden items to unlock many extras in the game. Plus additional healing items for both him and Jennifer are hidden yet essential since the main game provides very few visible ones. However when finding hidden items, that’s when Brown’s mechanical flaws come to light, many times Brown has lead Jennifer to doors that are unable to access or unlock in that particular point in the game, or several times Brown has become ‘trapped’ in a loop where he either continuously leads Jennifer between entering one room into another, or he gets stuck in a particular corner of the room. Also unlike ‘Haunting Ground’ you have very little interaction with Brown, with Hewie you could pat, scold and even shake hands, but Jennifer can only use the commands ‘stay’, ‘come’ and ‘find’. The end result is that Brown comes off with little personality and the game could still be playable if Brown wasn’t at the unlucky girl’s side. If you so happen to enjoy your first play through, there are many elements that call for a second try, including unlocking weapons, costumes, a sound test and a cut scene theatre. As mentioned above most are connected to finding hidden items via Brown within each chapter of the game, though the extra costumes are very different to the run-of-the-mill found in games, only those who were able to stand the gameplay first time round will have the stomach to try again.
Taken as a whole, there is not enough ‘good’ going for it for light gamers to give a try, only hardcore Survival Horror gamers and those who favour a good story over playability factor will find something worth struggling through here. I do have a fondness for this game, and I do not regret purchasing this title on any level. Personally I would recommend this to anyone, however I know this game will not be for everyone.
Song of the Blog
This week we have the luring theme song from the survival horror game "Rule of Rose" entitled 'A Love Suicide'. Due to lack of space, please click here for lyrics! Sorry to jet but, this is me, over and out. December 23 Ho Ho Ho!Happy Holidays Everyone! ![]() I hope you are all well, I also hope that all the pretty decorations are up, the stress of Christmas shopping is behind you and you all have nice plans during this lovely time of year.
On the evening of Thursday 20th December, I've just returned from my Christmas lunch with work and it was my last day at the office! I now do not return to work until 2008 (2nd to be precise), so thats about 2 weeks of Xmas cheer, time with friends/family and lie ins! I hope others have booked some time off work as well, and those who are at uni and get time off automatically....good for you!
Is it me or did 2007 go extremely fast? Well it might have been more of the case for me since I have been ill since April, plus 2 months absent from work, but still I feel like a whole year has been wasted and I've hardly evolved since my last entry reflecting back from the previous year. I've not accomplished any of the revolutions I made for myself at the beginning of 2007. Do you remember what goals I set myself? Lets look over them shall we briefly?
So yeah, apart from Salmonella poisening, not really much to brag about this year. Hopefully the end of 2007 will end on a high and 2008 will kick 2007's arse! I really need things to go well for me next year to make up for such a horrible year. Let's move onto my...
Life Update
Now that it's the Xmas holidays, I've had a chance to catch up with those closest to me. Plus some several good events have happened and I got myself a new toy...interested? Read on!
Let's start with the bad, I broke my little toe on my left foot.
Ok tell a lie its not a broken just badly bruised. I thought I just bashed it but when it swelled to 3 times its normal size in 10 minutes I decided to put some ice on it...it turned blue then purple then red. This was the thursday before my last day of work so my last few days at the office were of my hobling around the room. Had to strap it up whenever I went out. So this affected my work and seeing people plus it drew out a horrible cold (probably due to shock), but it's a lot better now and although still not quite the right colour, I can deal.
In my intro I stated that I had an office Xmas Party. The kids department all went to the Sarastro Restaurant in Drury Lane, it used to be a Russian theatre, all of the inside is gold and velvet plus skeletons and opera masks are hanging on the walls. Yeah sure it looks camp in places and gothic in others, but it is a great place! On the top floor, access only by stairs are booths which you can book, in each booth you can draw the certains so that you can get drunk in your own little section of the restaurant! In the toilets, to add a little spice to your normal routine, all of the walls have erotic arts. Most of the are sketchy but they range from orgys to devils sucking on female's breasts. If you're interested in something a little different this restaurant is a good choice! The only things I thought let it down where the graffiti that can be found in some of the booths and in the toilets. Plus the turkey I had for dinner was a bit dry...but everything else was very enjoyable! Look in my albums for pictures of the place if you're interested!
Secret Santa took place again this year, last year I had Billie and my gift to her proved to be popular. I got 'Pretty Woman' DVD as a joke from Becky B last year as well. This year was different for me, I had Anna, the female presenter from Toonattik, I got her some Lush a recommened by her presenter co-worker, Jamie. It was quite perfect really, in Lush they do special boxes which are wrapped up and with bow, one was called 'Secret Santa' and it was £5....which was the limit to spend! Score me thinks!
This year I got a Studio Ghibli film "The Cat Returns" from Linda as she lent it to me a few weeks ago and I said I loved it! So I walked away happy! You can read my review for the DVD below in this blog's edition of 'The Wahwah Views'.
I saw Andy the day after he returned from his first term as a 2nd year, I went round his for the afternoon and then we went to see "The Night Before Christmas", which was held at the Misken theatre (our old 6th form college). It was set several generations after Tim Burton's classic: "The Nightmare Before Christmas", about Zack Jackson, the newly appointed Pumpkin King and Jack Skellington's great-grandson, his world is turned upside down when he falls in love with Sandy Claws' daughter - Holly. It wasn't bad, Andy really enjoyed it and they had good song choices. I wasn't fond of certain re-use of gags and songs which were taken from 'Ponochio' which was the Christmas production 2 years ago (seems lasy to me) and I think some of the characters where annoying rather than funny. But I was happy just to be with Andy, though I still feel fragile its nice we can actually do some things together now than we could duirng the summer when I last saw him. I have really missed him whilst he was in Totnes...
He also came over the day afterwards (sunday) for dinner, alcohol and laughs. On Sunday I had a brief visit from George too! He came by to drop off a Xmas card since he was in town, it's always nice to see him, it's such a shame we don't se each other as much as we would like to. He seems happy at his job and his relationship with Lou is still blossoming; it's nice to know that even great distances can't sether the bond of two hearts.
Landa came up to see me for lunch one friday a few weeks ago; I took her to the Japanese place thats behind Waterloo station, it was the first time she's tried Japanese and we both really enjoyed it. It also gave me chance to give her a large bouquet of flowers, the one that was supposed to have shown up on her doorstep on her actual birthday. She really loved them but dreaded taking them into uni after lunch!
I've also taken Kinesha to the same restaurant several weeks beforehand! She works literally round the corner from me, and we arranged to meet up before I went to American and got sick, but due to such events it was always postponed. But we managed to sneak in a lunch on a friday and we shared a pleansent conversation over a delightful Japanese cuisine. We also planned ot go ice skating however we booked the tickets too late for the date we wanted, then we couldn't agree on an alternative day since we also included our old school friend Emma. I tried to arrange another lunch before the end of 2007 but again, work and timing got in the way. I really hope 2008 brings us closer together and develop the friendship we lost after we left secondary school, time will tell I suppose!
On Saturday 22nd December we had a small Xmas party, it was from 2pm til about 10pm when everyone finally left. Andy and Katy showed up which lighten up my spirits as I haven't seen Katy since her birthday and Andy all week, I gave Katy her presents and we made plans later in the week to really catch up. I invited Landa and George also but they were unable to come. Daniel had several of his friends for about 2 hours and Brian & family made face too.
What made this day a landmark was that I had my FIRST ALCOHOLIC DRINK SINCE I GOT SICK! SO LITERALLY SINCE APRIL! Originally I planned to have my drink at the office Xmas lunch but I decided against it in the end, instead I had a glass of Champagne with pomogranite juice (to make it change colour, which I like!). Mum gave it to me ay 4.15pm (ish) and I finished it at 9pm...I wanted to go slowly since I know I'm most likely to get sick and drunk if I swallowed it whole like I usually do! I felt fragile during and after drinking but I'm proud of myself that I've taken that extra small step to getting back to my old self!
The last major event since my last blog is...I GOT A WII!!!
Yes I finally have a gorgeous Wii in my home, and it's all MINE! Literally I've nicknamed it "MINE!" and I paid for all of it! I've had my eye on the Wii for ages now, originally I wasn't bothered but then the game library grew and I became rather intrigued by it. Games which made me think twice about it include Mario Galaxy, Soul Calibur Legends in 2008, Sonic and the Secret Rings and Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games. Whenever I saw one in the office been given away as a competition prize I would eye it like a gold mine! I postponded purchasing it for sometime still unsure, but then 3 weeks ago my collague, Amy, gave me the Mario and Sonic Olympic game for free! She got a copy from a company but she has no use for it, and since she knew I liked Sonic - she handed it over. I didn't have a Wii at the time but if someone gave you a free game you've desired for ages you cannot not buy a new console now can you?
![]() However when browsing the shops I didn't realise the Wii was the No.1 Christmas present of 2007! I thought the hype was in 2006 but no, out of stock everywhere, I even discovered a site that specialised in notifying people when shops had stock! One Game store clerk said to me that they had stock in the morning and 30 minutes later they were all sold out. Also, Nintendo DS have been sold out quickly also! Nintendo are doing well for themselves aren't they?
Anyways I later decided to wait till after the new year when the need to get one had died down, however on Friday 21st I walked past Woolworths and saw a hand drawn sign saying 'Wii is in Stock'. It was in the afternoon so I expected this to no longer be valid but when I got to the desk and asked for one there it was! I have to buy 2 games worth at least £34.99 with it, in total I spend about £300 if you include the extra controller and nunchuck I got from Game so Daniel could play with me.
So I now have 5 games (including the free game at work, Wii sports that comes free with the Wii and the 3rd game I got at Woolworths 'cos I wanted it).
I'll hopefully do a mini review on all the games I have plus the Wii on another entry for you if you plan to purchase this delightful games console. Watch this space if you're interested!

![]() Film Title: Spiderman 3 Synopsis: Peter Parker’s life has hit a high; he’s with the woman he loves, Spiderman is now loved by the public and things are looking up for the man who struggled in the past since he got his spidey powers. However his happiness is short lived when his past comes back to haunt him, his old friend Harry is out to kill him and things begin to slide with Mary Jane. To top if off, a mysterious ooze from outer space sets its sights on Peter! When I read reviews about this movie on the net, most of general public made the movie sound like it’s the worst Marvel comic based movie since Daredevil! But when I watch it, I thought it was far from it! The acting is still top-notch, the special effects are by far the best in the Spiderman series so far, the battle scenes have been beautifully constructed and the story – not without its faults – but is strong enough to carry the Spiderman legacy forward.
Film Title: Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer Synopsis: Set 2 years after the first movie, The Silver Surfer comes to Earth and causes dramatic climate changes to the planet Earth. Mr Fantastic/Reed Richards and Invisible Woman/Sue Storm are preparing for their wedding but things don’t go according to plan when a strange phenomenon causes a huge blackout and the Silver Surfer makes contact with the heroes – to warn of the destruction of their planet!
Film Title: The Cat Returns Synopsis: Haru seems to be having a string of bad luck in life; she's late for school, gets laughed at for being late and the boy she likes is going out with someone else. However when she rescues a cat from being run over by a truck, the cat speaks to her and promises to pay her back. That night the King of Cats arrives at her doorstep to invite her to his kingdom and marry his son - Prince Lune - the cat she saved!
The animation is slightly different to the typical Studio Ghibli style, the eyes are slightly bigger and are a bit brighter but the magic is still there! I really enjoyed this film, it was light hearted and had a Disney feel to it - that it took you into this other magical world but wasn't filled with love stories and over the top meaningful messages. There are some wonderful and funny characters in this film, and as you can see above some brillant voice acting! My only complaint is Anne Hathaway who sometimes did the typical American slang (like 'whateva') when voicing the main character but she was great any other time. The only other thing I didn't like was that it was quite short compared to other Studio Ghibli films, I think a particular relationship was rushed at the end and could've been better if the film was slightly longer, but still, I loved it! I would recommend you see 'Whispers of the Heart' before watching this film, simply because this film was made because the main character in 'Whispers of the Heart' wrote a fantasy story and it was so popular in Japan that Studio Ghibli made it into a film! I also recommend this film to parents and teachers who wish to occupy their kids for about an hour and I'm sure they won't take their eyes off the TV! Film Title: Grave of the Fireflies Synopsis: Based upon a semi-autobiography of the same name; set in Japan during World War II, Setsuko and Seita are brother and sister trying to survive in the countryside with their relatives with little food, little shelter, air raid bombings and both parents deseased. Seita tries to live in his father's shadow by struggling to keep him and his little sister alive, often resorting to his life savings and even stealing...will the war ever end?
I heard much things about this movie before my collague lent me the DVD, I heard it has made many people cry after watching it and that it's one of the best war films of all time. Well it takes a lot to make me to cry and I'm not the biggest fan of war movies; but I still was intrigued. No I didn't cry but the characters were very well protrayed and developed perfectly. There were some very heart felt moments and the animation compliment them too. Game Title: ObsCure After completely finishing off Haunting Ground, I decided to search the net for something similar in the Survival Horror catalogue. After much browsing I came across a game known as “Obscure”, though gameplay and story wise it was completely unrelated to Haunting Ground – it also wasn’t like Resident Evil or Silent Hill. Plus it was published by a European country, after reading a review on “Chris’ Survivor Horror Quest” site; I knew I had to find it. About 1 month later, in a small “pre-owned” games shop I manage to find it, after about 10 hours I completed my first run of the game. Was it that good I wanted to see it to the end as fast as my fingers could press the buttons, or was it really that short and terrible?
One evening, in Leafmore High School, Kenny Matthews is in the changing rooms when his belongings are swiped. Following his thief, he is lead into an underground laboratory underneath the school, where students are being experimented on and horrible creatures lurk in the darkness! The next morning, Kenny is nowhere to be found, so his younger sister and his girlfriend decide to stay after school to look for him. Little do they realise what terror is out on the loose within their school grounds…
The game allows you to control 5 teenagers, who all have their own special abilities to use on the field and have personal view on the games events. So when they examine items or when they enter a cut scene they add their own spin and dialogue into the situation. The player controls one teenager and can have another occupy them whilst exploring the haunted school, who is control by the computer’s AI. The AI controlled characters reacts well to all the enemies and surroundings (so reliable in combat) however you must supply them with weapons and heal them as they cannot heal themselves or you. Sometimes they get in the way when you’re trying to explore certain areas, especially small ones, but it’s forgivable since they tend to cover your back and strike the enemy before you’ve even seen it!
The characters “special abilities” are very realistic, as in they don’t have ‘magic powers’ or anything that maybe out of the ordinary, so it keeps in tone with the whole “high school” theme. For instance we have Stanley Jones, a slacker and stoner who can pick locks on certain doors, Shannon Matthews who’s the bright spark of her school & can offer clues on what to do next, and Josh Carter, a reporter for the school paper who can tell if there are any hidden items left in a particular room. Although only 2 of the 5 teenagers are needed to actually complete the game, the rest are mainly to help in combat or provide variety to the gameplay but they are interesting to play around with and are portrayed very well. An interesting element to the gameplay is the 2 player incorporation that can be activated anytime in the game; a 2nd player can easily plug in, pick up the control and control the 1st player’s partner, controlling all of its actions! It’s easy to stay together since whenever a player moves into another room that requires a screen change, the other player automatically joins the first player.
The graphics are ok considering it was released in 2004; the backgrounds are nicely detailed and the creatures themselves – although most of the time surrounded in darkness so are not clear to see – are detailed enough but still come off as “generic gruesome creatures” seen in most horror games and movies. The characters themselves are good but look a little stiff and in some of the cut scenes the graphics aren’t as smooth and polished as they could be. The controls are quite different to normal games that require combat, as they use the L and R buttons to access you inventory rather than through the pauses menu. Since you can combine weapons, holding both the L and R buttons down plus using the D pad can seem a little tricky at first but becomes easier as you go along. Using this system makes it seem more ‘life like’, since you’re wide open to attack whilst fishing out a weapon, and it’s also quite compact and sleek since both inventories are shown on bottom corners of the screens therefore not distracting you from your surroundings. Though the controls are explained certain other elements are not, or several game mechanics are explained too late to be taken into effect, therefore giving the player an unfair playing field. For example, when one of the teenagers dies, that’s it. You can’t bring them back, but you can continue without them. Though it becomes apparent that you can continue the game without all the teenagers, the game doesn’t say if they can be revived or you must restart again if you get into the situation where you need a particular character who has already died. And since healing items are few and far between as well as saving points, characters dying will not be a stranger to anyone playing this game. The game requires to explore the school and solve some puzzles in order to advance in the game; the puzzles range from finding appropriate items to open a particular door and others simply require exploring; such as finding alternative means to enter a room when the door is blocked. None of the ‘puzzles’ are hard enough to put off anyone from replaying but are too simple to but considered puzzles in the first place!
The unlockables are actually quite varied from stuff you can use in-game, to material you can sit back and watch. ‘In game’ extras include new weapons and new costumes, whilst ‘out game’ include music videos from SUM 41 and SPAN, a “making of” video, galleries (character and background artwork) and a “Special mode”. Some are only accessible after completing hard mode, but this again like normal mode will not take you long.
The major faults for this game range from big to small; the biggest being the actual length of the game, which you can tell from my finish time above that it’s rather small for your average game. Despite very few saving points, few healing items, several small puzzles, limited ammo and loads of monsters to tackle – this game doesn’t have what it takes to keep a player going for more than a few play-throughs (and that’s if you really want to play all the various difficulty modes and really desire to unlock everything). All in all I did enjoy this game; it may have been predictable, small and only somewhat original, the game originally costs £20 brand new – you can’t really complain! If you’re a horror fan and want something to waste away a few hours, give this game a go. This game is also fun if you have a mate around to play with since it’s relatively short. If you’re hoping for something groundbreaking, this isn’t the place to look. This game was interesting enough to make me want to put the sequel, Obscure 2 (now available in selected stores) on my Christmas list! So if you see a copy in your local second hand shop, it’s worth a few quid! Plus with the names Stan, Kenny and Mr Garrison in the game – who can say no?
Song of the Blog Christmas is upon us, so you want some Christmas jingles? Song Title: Mad World All around me are familiar faces I hope everyone has a lovely Christmas and very happy new year. Hopefully I get to say happy new year properly to you all before the end of 2007! This is me, over and out! November 20 God I Need to Update More Often!Hello Everyone
I have to say that I'm well quite happy at the moment. Well, more like everytime I open up the MSN spaces status.
I'm liking the new updates, especially the "counter" of how many views your msn space has had in a day, which is the main contribution to my small dose of happiness! Several times I've logged onto my msn space page and see double figures of views I've had on my space! Ok it's not been more than 12 and I've had no comments but it's nice that people stop by! Thanks to all those who are nosy enough to look at my blog! The only update I don't like is the limted text...annoying as some fo the reviews I wanted to publish had to be removed since it was too much for the entry to handle!
It's been to long since my last update and hopefully people will be stopping by more often now that I have posted a new blog!
Just so people know, my blog usually comes in various sections: an opening (like this one), my personal life update, a review section on various things and lyrics for the song I've upload for the blog. In the past I've tried to separate the sections with different coloured texts, different fonts or try to put big gaps between them. Now I've decided to put large titles! Well originally it was banners but highlighted titles will do for now. And I've named each section too (some badly) but hopefully obvous to what they are. So let's get started shall we?
Rants, Rants, Rants!
Let's start off this blog with a few complaints shall we? Or, as "Hey! Answerman" on Anime News Network site likes to open up with recently, "What I'm currently fed up with"
Alright I'll shut up now! Let's move on... Life Update
God a lots happened! Well it's doesn't feel like it but I tend to add bulletin points on anything major happening in my life to a draft page and it seems to have pilled up since I've last updated!
Let's start with me; I'm a lot better than I was in my last entry, recovering slowly from my Salmonella poisening and I'm now off the tablets (yay!). Still not quite right, I've seen any of my mates at all, spend most of my weekends at home looking after my currently very unwell mum (painful knee, long story, but has been refered to hospital, and since her job as a teacher requires her to stand up it's not helping it!) and work during the week. Since I'm still unsure of when I'm likly to fully recover, I've decided not to go to the BAFTAS. I was invited by my work to go since we were nominated for several awards (we didn't make the final cut but we were planning to go for the hell of it anyways) but it's in 2 weeks time, and I didn't really want to go is my stomach was acting up that day. Plus it was on a Sunday night, in London, and I had to get up early for work the next morning anyways so...in the end I turned down my invite. But I hope everyone else in my office has a brillant time!
At work I have been trained on the new AVID system we are currently installing for GMTV, I've been trained on "Access" and "Assist", I also have a login which is counted as an "Administrator", meaning I can do anything I want on the system! Mhahaha! I really enjoyed the trainign actually, I like learning new things as it gets my brain working, plus my boss said I did really well; praising me which I did appriciate since my confidence in myself at the moment is minimal. I've added my training to my CV, I hope to properly start looking for another job by next year. I've been there for 2 years now, I'm 19 years old, I need to move on and explore new horizons. But first! My health needs to be tip top shape! So I'm ok where I am at the moment.
Another thing relating to me is my car! My poor bank account has suffered to repair my poor neglected car! I had problems with it in the being of September, and since I needed a new tax disc and MOT by October, so I got my mum's friend (whose used to be a machanic) to take a look at it. Apparently it had a major oil leak which he wasn't prepare to fix since it would take ages to locate where it came from and to fix. Since I love my car, I decided to take it to a garage. The saw the cause and small other errors, the result? £580! I thought it was worth it, but then my tension belt busted when I tried to drop Daniel off at our father's (I broke down at the roundabout, bloking a lot of angry rugby fans since it was the night of the finals and a lots of long red buses!!) and had to call the RAC to help me! That costed another £50 plus £180 for my tax disc...at least my car's fine now...I think...hasn't broken down since so that's a good sign!
All my close friends and boyfriend have returned to university, but are back about 2 weeks before Chrismtas which I'm looking forward too. I'm aiming to be well enough to have an alcoholic drink on Christmas (fingers crossed!). I plan to visit my friend Katy and Andy before they return but might not be able to. Last I saw of Katy was on her birthday at the beginning of September. I got her some Transformers DVDS (free from work), the Transformers soundtrack as she loved the movie and a Sora (Kingdom Hearts 2) figurine, which I originally ordered her for Christmas but cancelled it and bought off ebay for her b-day. I only saw her for a few hours but she seemed to love her prezzies. We've e-mailed a few times, as I didn't get to see her before she went back to uni which was a shame, she seems happy in her new home (living with boys) and partying like there's no tomorrow! Hopefully when I am fully recovered I'll drive down to her place and catch up on some serious fun!
I manage to see Andy before he left for uni, I booked a day off and so I stayed over. I wasn't much company considering I was [feeling] quite crappy at the time, but it was worth it in the end. We've kept contact over MSN and he seems happy that I'm getting better. Hopefully 2008 will be a better year for us since my illness has been quite a strain on us!
Another friend I managed to see was Landa! I took a day off to see her too since we hadn't properly seen each other since Christmas! We only had a meal together in a chinese place but it was wonderful to see her doing well and happy at uni, I plan to see her for lunch next week and more often then on! Her birthday was recently too, I tried to seen her some flowers and a balloon for her birthday to her door, but unfortunetly the flower company screwed up (they lost my purchase details) so I was extremely disappointed! But I was refuned and I plan to make it up to her at Christmas.
My brother has started college in Saint Lukes in Sidcup, and seems to be generally happy! He likes the classes (has changed one of his subjects but he's a smart boy!), he has had an eye on a girl who lives in an evil pink house round the corner from where I live! But it seems she's a player and a bitch! So now is not only the pink house evil but the people inside it are aswell! Oh well, I'm sure Daniel will be fine! He has his family backing him up all the way! (That includes moi...)
I don't think there's much else to say....well some of the above events go intoi a little more detail but you get the jest!
Before we get to the reviews, I had a situation occur when I tried to upgrade my phone via my mobile network, Orange, they really infuriate me. I typed it up because I couldn't really take it out on Orange at the time and wanted to get it off my chest. I guess I've posted it up on here in hope others who've experienced something simular would give advice or let me know if they did so I can know that I'm not the only one getting screwed over. If you're not interested, feel free to scroll past it.
Orange Complaint
I currently have a N70 phone, paying £37 for 240 minutes and 170 texts, I got this phone on January 2006 and the contract was for 6 months. Nowadays, people would look at my bill and say; "What a rip off!" but back then they had no "Dolphin" or "Raccoon" plans on offer and it was a good deal at the time.
In August 2007, I decided I wanted to upgrade my phone, after browsing many phones the Samsung G600 drew my attention. I went to my local Orange shop and was pleased when trying it out in the shop, so decided to upgrade to the G600. However, apparently there was a problem with my account which they couldn’t fix in the shop, I was told to call Orange direct and upgrade via them.
On the phone, eventually the problem was fixed (apparently instead of saying my account was due for an upgrade, it said it was faulty). I picked a dolphin £30 per month contract and requested the G600; however I was told that I would have to pay £100 for the phone. When I asked why I had to pay so much for a phone, he said that it’s a new model and despite that the monthly Orange magazine stating that it’s free on £35+ contracts, he said that increasing my contract payment would not make a difference. He eventually convinced me to go for the U600 (which was free) and nicely, gave me an extra 100 minutes talk time. Which was fair enough, however literally minutes later after hanging up, I log onto myspace and see advertisements for the same phone, available on 2 contracts, both dolphin, both for the same lengh of time I agreed to, one paying £5 less than what I agreed yet only had to pay £50 for the phone, and another paying £5 more contract wise and yet get the phone for FREE!
I called Orange again, speaking to a different person from before, asking why I wasn’t offered the same deal as what was advertised, “That’s for new customers only” he stated, annoyed, I hung up and waited for my new phone. I disliked the touch sensitive buttons and the phone in general so I called customer services and asked for it to be returned.
No further problems occurred until I called a week later, after the phone was returned. I looked around more for phones during the time I waited for the Orange return bag to be sent to me, since I didn’t want to pay £100 for the Samsung, I asked if the Nokia N73 was available, despite being a much older phone than the G600 (at least 6 months), the price for the phone was £120! I asked why was it so much for an older phone when it clearly states in the Orange monthly magazine that the phone is free on £25+ contracts and I already stated that I wanted the £30 a month contract – surely I applied, but no. I didn’t quality for a free N73 since I was “upgrading” my contract, not getting a new one which is was the price quoted in the magazine is referring to. Even though it doesn't state so in the brochure.
I told the woman that my current contract is under my mum’s name (I was too young to have a contract in my name when I got it last year, I was 17) and that, now 19, the new contract would be in MY name, plus it’s completely different to my current contract, but no yet again, it still counts as an “upgrading contract”…so no free phone. None of this was mentioned in the magazine, or in the shop. I was instead offered a different free phone, also Nokia, but was no where near the capacity of my current phone.
Pissed off, I decided to go to the Orange shop the next morning and complain. At the shop, I threatened to leave after explaining briefly what has happened. The nice people I spoke to stated that I was on a low “brand”, meaning that I haven’t gone over my limited use of free minutes/texts enough to qualify for some free upgrades to more expensive phones. The example the employee gave was that he spends easily £200 a month on his bill; hence he’s a brand 5, so he can get more expensive phones for free. I have NEVER heard of this and was again irritated that another Orange customer service employee has yet given ANOTHER excuse why I couldn’t have the phone I want. Why should I have to pay £200 a month, presumably for a long period of time, resulting in at least £1000 charges just to qualify for a £100 phone??
He eventually offered a deal of a free Samsung G600 with 500 minutes, unlimited texts, £35 a month, 10% off the line price and £8 off a month if I trade in my old phone, the catch it that it's a new contract, meaning new number. A good deal as it may seem however I had to complain and threaten to leave and speak to numerous people just to be offered a good deal.
So it’s become clear from this that to me that: A) Despite being an Orange customer for over 6 (possibly more) years, it means nothing to these people. I have never complained before, always paid my bills on time (via direct debit) and had never had problems with Orange before, until now. B) My N70 contract was only for 6 months, I’ve had it for over 20 months so far, meaning they’ve had £740 at least out of me, much more than expected when I originally signed the contract, this is 7 times more than what I was asked to pay for the phones I wanted… C) All 3 Orange people I spoke to regarding why I couldn’t have the phone all gave different reasons, like they are all prepared with a story to why I have to pay extra, fleecing me of my money. None of them add up together and some (mainly the people I spoke to over the phone) didn’t make sense! D) I do not appreciate feeling ‘pressured’ to use all my minutes/texts up just to get a more expensive phone. I chose the X amount of minutes because it was what I use that doesn’t break the barrier of “free”, if I did use 500 minutes and 1000 texts each month I would have a plan that compensates that!
I felt reluctant to stay with Orange for another 18 months, and I feel that Orange does not appreciate it’s long term customers, which is what they should be more concerned about. New customers can come and go, whatever good deals you flash in front of them, if you keep your currently customers happy you’re going to have a long term incoming of cash anyway! I was disappointed and angry, so I started looking at other mobile networks to look at their deals as well as read people's opinions on that company, after talking to several collagues at work, they all stated that all companies go by the "go overboard with minutes/texts for a free expensive phone", and I've really not had any problems with Orange until I tried to upgrade via phone. I accepted the contract in the end, and after a week I cancelled the contract and sent back the phone since I was unhappy with both. So the uphill struggle for one phone wasn't worth it in the end. But it has made me see Orange's true colours...they don't value their long term customers enough, I hope that my next attempt at upgrading (which won't be till I find a new phone I like) will be a more pleasent experience.
The WahWah Views Right, with that over with tt's time for the reviews section once again, now you maybe wandering about the name of this section ^^ Today we have 3 relatively new alternative rock albums (2007 is a good year for rock!) and 1 not-so new Survival Horror games that I've recently discovered, played and loved. I also had 2 movie reviews and another game review - but I shall post those on another blog (which you'll probably find above this one!) Artist: The Birthday Massacre Like most fans I’ve seen on sites such as Amazon, I feel in love with ‘The Birthday Massacre’ after hearing their god-sent album; ‘Violet’. Not only was it original but it was an enchanting mixed with brilliant blending of vocals and instruments. It was a work of art! I only discovered the band earlier in the year and was thrilled to hear that a new album was due for release in late October. After a few listens, I’ve grown to love this album. It may not be as “OH MY GOD I HAVE TO HEAR MORE FROM THIS BAND!” as ‘Violet’ made me and many others feel, but it’s a brilliant follow up! The album starts on a high with “Kill the Lights”, lyrics referring to fairy tales plus with the catchy rhythm was a nice blend. The album then slowly declines with ‘not so memorable’ songs until “Red Stars” (the lead single from this album), a heavy ‘head bang’ worthy song and good choice for single. Those who liked “Blue” from ‘Violet’ will love this track as well. Again the album goes down with more bland-ish songs until “To Die For”, a remake of one of their earlier works, there’s something about the song that’s intriguing and pulls you in. Chibi’s vocals are strong as well. The end of the album remains strong, and goes out with a bang with “Movie”, probably the slowest song I’ve heard from them and the most captivating. Chibi’s vocal again shine through.
Artist: Nightwish Since the firing of their previous main vocalist; Tarja Trunen, a lot of talk of who will be the next front woman and if the band can still live after her departure. I can safely say that after listening to this album, Nightwish still has a long and wonderful career ahead of them. This album proves with Tarja was not the force behind Nightwish, but in fact the very talented Tuomas Holopainen (keyboardist and songwriter) plus the efforts on those around him will prove the world Nightwish are, in fact, back! “The Poet and the Pendulum”, opening track to the album, is the common ‘over 10 minute’ track on the album, powerful as always and like a combination of 4 songs combined with poetry. The next track, “Bye Bye Beautiful” is a hard hitting, heavy number full of attitude similar to “Wish I Had an Angel” from their previous album, “Once”. However the move from Annette’s voice to Marco’s isn’t as smooth as “Wish I had An Angel”. “Amaranth”, the lead single from this album, is the most mainstream track from Nightwish and probably the best deliverance of Annette’s vocals. It’s quite an upbeat and well produced. The album kicks into “angry” mode again with more heavy tracks such as “Cadence of her Last Breath”, until “Eva” – a charity single released only in Finland and lead many fans that the band had gone soft! Easily the sweetest and conventional ballads they’ve performed so far. The album then hits the ‘experimental’ approach with “Sahara”, an Egyptian inspired melody and “The Islander” which sounds like a camp fire song! The album goes from strength to strength and ends on a sweet note in “Meadows of Heaven”. On the whole it’s quite a dark yet experimental album, very much worth the wait.
Artist: Apocalyptica In the beginning, Apocalyptica started out as cover band, their first album; “Plays Metallica” featured covers of famous Metallica songs using only string instruments such as cellos and violins. They were, and are still extremely original, since then they’ve grown into their own style with added guitars. After 8 albums they are a force to be reckoned with! Mainly filled with instrumentals, they have delivered some heart pounding, emotionally driven melodies and also had professional vocalist from other rock bands perform songs for their more recent albums. After a year of silence, they are back and heavier than before! “I’m Not Jesus”, sung by ‘Corey Taylor’ (lead singer of Slipknot/Stone Sour) is the first single from the album and a very strong one at that. The lyrics are quiet dark and angry – something that Corey is no stranger to. He’s clear in words and delivers well, the band stands strong beside him as well, in short – great choice for single. ‘Till Lendemann’, the male vocalist for Rammstein provides a German cover of ‘David Bowie’s “Heroes”, known as “Helden” on this album. A slow paced song but ‘Till Lendemann’s voice itself is enough to draw anyone into it and out the other end (personally I think Till’s involvement with the album was a very good idea!). ‘Adam Gonteir’, from the grunge band “Three Days Grace” sings “I Don’t Care”, despite my liking for his voice and his impressive vocal range, the song isn’t as strong as the others. The verses and lyrics are enough to keep the listener intrigued but the chorus is bland and uninspired, and unfortunately doesn’t recover for the rest of the track. ‘Cristina Scabbia’, the front woman from ‘Lacuna Coil’ provides a stunning performance for “SOS (Anything But Love)”, a song about an abusive relationship. Though I don’t listen to her stuff in Lacuna Coil, she really out-does herself in this song and puts forth the emotional strain and hurt of a violent relationship can be. Best track on the album!
Game Title: Haunting Ground The game begins with Fiona, a female teenage collage student waking up wearing nothing but a sheet inside an animals cage in an underground basement that is covered in blood, dirt and shadows. As she escapes her cage and explores the mansion she has woken up in, she learns of the death of her parents in a car accident and that she has inherited a gothic castle, all through the encounters of the residents inside it. However inside these dark walls lies a sinister secret and the residence don’t seem to want Fiona to leave… When it comes to games from the horror genre, the most notable titles will be Resistant Evil, Silent Hill and Clock Tower. They are well known for being made into films (regardless of whether it’s a box office bomb or not) and for having generic zombies hordes trying to kill you. Horror games themselves fall under 2 categories: the Survival Horror that involves usage of guns, crossbows and various other weaponry against creatures of the undead kind. The other category is the type where the main character has to fend for themself without the use of a weapon and solve puzzles, Haunting Ground is found under the latter. Unlike series such as Resident Evil, Fiona cannot defend herself with kick-arse weaponry, the game is based on the player using their wits to solve puzzles to progress in the game and hide from your pursuer using hiding spots located throughout the game; such as underneath beds, inside wardrobes and in the bushes. The number of hiding places decreases as you proceed further in the game. The system works so that if you use a hiding space too frequently the pursuer will catch onto your plans and find you; hence you have to run away again. You can also use evasion points that can distract or disable an enemy for a short period of time, these only work once so they are not to be used lightly.
Fiona isn’t alone against the darkness though, a unique feature to aid the player is a white German Shepard called Hewie, rescued by Fiona near the beginning of the game he helps Fiona through puzzles and combat. Using the appropriate controls you can give commands to the dog as well as praise him (if he behaves well) or scold him (if he disobeys). Hewie is extremely realistic in his movements and re-actions to his surroundings. He wags his tail, he growls at enemies, he plays dead, the whole lot! He’s a warm welcome factor to this game that I have no seen anywhere else, and not only is he Fiona’s only chance for survival but he also provides the heart of the game, unless you hate dogs with a passion Hewie will warm all the player’s hearts. As well as Hewie, Fiona’s only other chance of defending herself is via kicking (which lacks range and power) and ‘alchemy compounds’ that she can find inside the castle, or make them herself using a synthesiser, which are located throughout the game. Items include equipment that can increase the damage she inflicts, accessories that increase her stamina or herbs to heal her whilst exploring the castle. Items are limited (and several are hidden to the naked eye so require Hewie to have a look around), plus the synthesizer is extremely difficult to use, so saving often (by examining clocks located in the castle) is a must.
Graphics are one of the highest points in the game, detail to the characters and their surroundings is remarkable, some of the best on the system. The details to the costumes, the facial expressions, the cut scenes – all are well thought and look fluid. The game pulls of the “dark and dreary” gothic castle and surroundings effectively. Also in gameplay, when exploring the castle there are no load times in between rooms, its all joined as one, so not only does it feel realistic but those who get frustrated with loading times will happily embrace this game!
Fiona is chased by 4 individuals, all representing different areas of the castle. Though their goals to hunt and kill Fiona are the same, the way they chase her and attack are unique to each enemy.
When Fiona is being pursued by a chaser, the background music will first mute, to warn of an enemy nearby, and when the chaser sees her the music will dramatically change to a high-tempo fast paced music that is intended to increase the tension and fright the player is feeling. Fiona has little health and defence, which unfortunately is not shown by any ‘health bar’, the same goes for Hewie. As Fiona continuously runs her stamina drops and getting hit lowers her health, you must read her physical reaction (such as her clucking her stomach) to see how much more she can take. If left untreated she and Hewie will eventually die, obviously leading to a “Game Over”. The game over screen will send a chill down any player's spine, especially is Fiona is killed by any of the stalkers, after the screen fades to red you can 'hear' the killer 'doing' things to Fiona body...if that is not enough to frighten you I don't know what is!
A unique feature used to project “fear” into the player is the “Panic Mode”; as Fiona wonders the castle various objects may scare her, and the chaser will also cause her heart race as well. As her fear increases, the screen becomes fuzzy, graining and greyscale, making it harder to see what’s on screen. The controller will rumble to represent her heart beat, Fiona will also begin to stumble and her voice increases in pitch when calling out to Hewie. As she becomes completely overcome with fear, the screen almost becomes impossible to make out your surroundings and Fiona runs frantically with little control given to the player. In this state is where Fiona is the most fragile, she can die in just one hit in this condition and she can also trip and become too paralyzed with fear to move making her even more vunerable and having to rely on Hewie to distract her pursuer. Though items can help and she gradually calms herself down over a period of time, the whole process itself makes gameplay rather interesting and unique. It also implants fear in the players hearts as they try to gain control over the poor woman. Though it can also be the cause of some frustration if killed several times in her panic state, overall it’s very lifelike and well thought-out.
Puzzles are the key to moving forward in each section of the castle, ranging from deactivating traps to opening secret passage ways. Some of the most thought-provoking puzzles look hard at first glance but become simple after the solution is uncovered, making multiple plays less daunting but also less challenging. However in your first play through when you’re mostly likely to take your time with the particular puzzle, you are left wide open to being attacked by the stalker. Since there are limited hiding places in the game it falls into a deadly pattern of: being stalked, running all the way back to a hiding place you haven’t already used, losing your chaser, walking back to the puzzle and before you can attempt it your manic friend is back for more! Though working out how to dodge enemies is easy enough, it eventually becomes tiresome and more like a “chore” rather than a part of the game. Several times I ended up switching off the game since I couldn’t get rid of the stalker long enough to progress further into the game. Another ‘not so obvious’ fault in the game becomes apparent after a few hours of intensive playing. The A.I of the chasers themselves are set to ‘unjust’ for a large portion of the game.
The reply value is pleasable as after the first play you gain loads of extras to play around with, but also at the risk of the fear and tension from the first play being abolished, as ‘triggers’ to when the current pursuer approaches and tactics they use become easy to spot and makes the game predictable. But the game does have 4 endings to uncover that have different requirements between them, and unlocking all four unlocks nearly all the hidden extras. A secret room is unlocked after first play, as well as a “hard mode” where your opponents are swifter in movement and fiercer in combat. The secret room allows the player to see in-game content; such as unlockable costumes, for both Fiona and Hewie, including a sexy cowgirl outfit for our heroine and a stuffed plush dog padding for Hewie. Also concept art, a cut scenes show reel, character models, soundtrack files and a mini game are available in the secret room too. Some content is unlocked depending which ending you achieve or which version you play. Before Haunting Ground I have never touched a Survival Horror Game, so I cannot compare the game to the likes of Clock Tower and Silent Hill, but this game provides good reply value and original gameplay that I have not seen in any other title in my collection. Despite the flaws I really enjoyed this game, it made my heart race and determined to unlock everything! Whether you’re a long term fan of survival horror or a complete newbie like me I recommend this, I found it hard at first since all the games I tend to play are the kind where the main character can defend him/herself, but this was a welcome challenge and offered many fun elements as well as suspense. Because of this game, I’m looking forward to trying out other survival horrors available, especially one’s that have similar game mechanics to this.
Song of the Blog Ok, this title, well usually we see "song of the week" or "album of the week" on music sites so why not "Song of the Blog"? ...Come up with something better if you don't like it!
My song choice for this blog is, did you guess it yet?, The Birthday Massacre. Having hearing their new album I felt compelled to add their first album; "Nothing and Nowhere" to my Christmas List and after seeing a fansite provide a download for a cover they did a while back, I had to add it to my itunes library and to my blog! It's a good cover and well produced. Though the file may not be best quality - its good enough! Enjoy!

Turn around, look at what you see
In her face, the mirror of your dreams Make believe I'm everywhere, Living in your eyes Written on the pages is the Answer to our neverending story Reach the stars, fly a fantasy Dream a dream, and what you see will be Lives that keep their secrets
Will unfold behind the clouds And there upon the rainbow is the Answer to our neverending story Show no fear, for she may fade away In your hand, the birth of a new day Lives that keep their secrets
Will unfold behind the clouds And there upon the rainbow Is the answer to our neverending story Well that's me done for another entry, thank you for reading, feel free to comment (please) and stop by any time! Hopefully it won't be long till I return. August 19 Long Time No Blog!Woah!
Eye-popping madness I'm having. My blog is visable again! And I can stand! Always a plus I know but it's been a complete emotional and physical nightmare since my last entry.
Too much has happened since my last blog to mention everything. I originally wanted to post this after I returned from Florida, however I got sick very badly, for 4 months and counting...2 of those months I was absence from work.
Why you ask? Salmonella poisening.
It's a very long story and involves much more detail, but the cliff notes version is that on 30th March, on the flight to Dallas, Texas via American Airlines. We were meant to get a connecting flight to Florida the same day however thunderstorms in Dallas resulted in a 4 hour flight delay, a extremely bumpy ride, horrible air attendent service, large amounts of people throwing up and grounded in Dallas for the night in a Holiday Inn.
The following morning I ordered an omlette, and every since then I've had about 5 trips to the hospital (2 in Florida), numourous blood tests (ever time I see a 'give blood' advent I say "I would if I had some left!"). As well as intensive exams, including a pelvic exam (extremely unconfortable), a CAT scan, an ultra-sound scan (now I know what to expect if I ever get pregnant) and a biopsie (camera down my throat, which was traumatising since the sedation didn't work so I was awake and choking on a large tube the entire time...).
This also doesn't help with the sudden crop up of family issues that have been haunting me and my family since October last year. Relating to my father, again as mentioned before in a previous entry I won't go into detail however the future looks rough ahead...
So yeah, I've not exactly been in a 'social' mood let alone a blogging mood. I do apologise if anyone does read this. I've seen through the new updates that people have been viewing my space though I'm not sure whether this is random people or my friends. Who knows? But thanks nevertheless for people stopping by, also to those who have supported me during my whole illness, even now as I'm still recovering and being patient with me.
I'm a lot better than I was, I get off days, I'm continuously tired and lacking of stamina and nausea/pain, but at least I can stand, sit up and walk...all good so far.
My original plan (before taking sick) was to review the different aspects of my Florida holiday, mainly the theme parks and restaurants I went to, as well as 2 games I've completed during my ill period - Haunting Ground and Final Fantasy 12. I still have a desire to do an detailed overview of my holiday; but since I'm still ill and am ever so slightly against America at the moment, I don't desire to be biased in my review. So I'll wait till I have the time and the patience to type it up. When I do it'll probably be on my livejournal site, which I only started when my MSN space wouldn't show my blog before all the updates. Now it's back and I'll try to put it into use. Use this link if you wish to view it for curiousity.
Also, if anyone happens to like my reviews can now find them on my amazon site too - not all from this space have been added but you'll find some new ones that will hopefully be of some use to you all. You can find them here: my amazon profile
Now to crack onto business, let's sum up the last few months shall we? Note I was ill this whole time but I'll try to bring it up as little as possible since I've probably already worn it to death...
Let's start with a general overview, more like observations - if you will, of what I've noticed whilst I was in America. Most of these are negative I should warn you. I'm sure how I feel from my Florida holiday does not represent the entire American population and country, so if you're from Washington or Texas and feel insulted by this I do apologise, but I'm sure if you came to London and had a terrible time you would use what you experience against the country itself. I'm not usually this against other countries or people, I usually against all forms of prejudices, I do plan to come back to the USA and have an enjoyable time and change my opinion on the country...but until then...
Here goes:
1) The Americans are either overly sweet, or cold hearted
Maybe not true but that's what I've picked up; one American citizen will seem like the most heart-warming, happiest, sweetest person you've ever met, the next person will be blunt, cold, non-cohearant and couldn't give a damn about anyone but themselves. There's no in between, just those two types of people.
2) EVERYTHING has sugar in it! Even the Bread!
If you have an extreme sweet tooth you'll love it here, if you like a variety of flavourings or hate sweet stuff you'll hate Florida! In Wal Mart you have about millions of brands of sweets, covering about 1/3 of the shop (bare in mind their supermarkets are about 5x the size of our 'standard' size supermarkets). And all the stuff that's meant to be sour or savoury are still sweet! Trying to eat toast when the bread itself is sweet, its disgusting!!!
Also you'll see this: maple flavoured sausage, maple flavoured bacon, maple flavoured bread, maple flavoured just-about-everything!
3) The Americans wouldn't known real bacon even if it hit them in the face!
All they have is streaky bacon. And it's all smoked. Thats it. No back bacon, no middle bacon, no unsmoked bacon. Just smoked streaky bacon...which has decent amount of fat but hardly any meat! THE MEAT IS THE WHOLE BLOODY POINT OF BACON!!!
On the subject of food, the only meat they have avaliable is Chicken or Beef. No pork or lamb...these people don't know what they are missing out on!!!!!
4) Greatest Marketing ploy? Cartoons!
If you live in America, have created a new product and wish to make it look appealing to customers - stick a cartoon on it!
Doesn't matter what you're product is; it could be a breakfast ceral, a type of sweet, plasters or even an inhaler! In all the super markets, you'll find most of the packaging covered in cartoons. It's not just the American based products, others such a Kellog's Corn Flakes has Ariel the Little Mermaid on the front!
The most common cartoons (at the time) were Spiderman, Dora the Explorer and Spongebob.
5) Television = Utter Crap!
Imagine yourself having just finished your dinner, you rest on the sofa, all nice and comfy, and wait for South Park to start.
After a long commercial, the "warning" before each episode appears, you sing along to the theme tune and then - what do you know? - ANOTHER COMMERCIAL!! Feeling like a prat you sit for a further 2 minutes, eventually give up and go to make yourself a cup of tea when - with no warning - the first part of the South Park episode starts to play.
Half way through another commerical plays, again without warning the 2nd half of the cartoon starts while you're in the bathroom. About 9 minutes past, and you guessed it, the 3rd commercial takes place. After 2 minutes of utter rubbish you are brought back to watch the credits...woopie doo...
I'm in no way exaggrating, this is not just with South Park, this situation is the same for the likes of Charmed, Friends, Movies, etc.
That's not even the worst, to my horror me and my brother discovered an American version of "Deal or No Deal". Upon seeing the flashy, solid gold logo for this version, I felt a horrible chill down my spine. The show takes places in a huge stadium, the boxes have been placed with suitcases, and the audience are complete idiots. They clap when the contestant picks a number, they clap when they see the amount, they clap when the presenter talks, they clap all the time! There's no "quiet time" or moments to think about accpeting offers like they do in the British version, they are always yelling, clapping, cheering! Grrr!
Also, instead of the "homely" feel that the British version gets, since all the contestants know each other, make jokes and relate to the audience. Instead contestants are just seen for one episode they are on, the suitcases are opened by size-zero models who are all wearing the same dress and there is no connection/friendship between the banker and presenter at all. The presenter spends 2 seconds on the phone then says to the contestant: "Oh he's worked you out, he's not scared of you" and jabbers on like that.
Superfical is the word me thinks.
6) Hate Queues?
Ok this may sound stupid, because the size of American is astromical compared to England, but the minimun waiting time in a queue for a ride is one hour, no less. Which makes theme parks less enjoyable since you haven't been on the rides before and you don't know which ones are worth the waiting time or not. It's more annoying in the water theme parks, you get yourself soaking in one ride, sit in a queue for 2 hours and by the time you get to the top of the next water slide you're completely dry - and probably sun burnt!
OK my American rant is over (for now...) let's move on shall we?
Most of the events that has happened since my blog are a bit hazzy now but this is what I can remember...
Before I got salmoella poisening in Florida, I went to visit Katy in Canterbury.
We were both under the weather (me cold, her flu) so it wasn't as hyper and energitic as we usually are with each other, but we had fun. I saw some Robot Chicken and Reboot on multi-regional DVD player and DVD I bought her, always great for a laugh. She should me some anime music vidoes, some really good one's too, and we watched "Sensitive Pornograph" too - a yaoi half hour show she downloaded. My first bit of hentai I've seen that wasn't a music video! The weather was mainyl cold but we went out with some of her friends for dinner on Saturday night, plus saw some scenery and did a bit of shopping (mostly for anime, food, and had a coffee break).
Also, after I came back from the USA and before I got worse, I went to see "Curse of the Golden Flower" with Katy, and gave her the prezzies I got for her. We got back late but we had fun and the movie was good. Asian movie are always visually beautiful but the storyline and endings make you (actually Katy) want to kill yourself...(not 'cos they're bad, they're despressing...you get what I mean!)
Several birthdays have passed since my last entry. One being my mums, my brothers and the other mine.
For mums it was the day after we got back from Florida, we didn't have much planned as we were either ill or jet-lacked. But she recieved a bunch of flowers from me plus presents from the family (me, daniel, Brian, Miranda, the boys and Andy).
Mine was on June 16th (Saturday), we went to Frankie and Bennies around the corner from my house for lunch with my family. The food and service has declined since our last visit, whether this was due to new management or since it was busy with children's parties at the time, who knows? In the evening Katy came round to "baby sit" me! The previous Saturday she surprised me with a visit, which put a big smile on my face considering how crappy I felt. We mainly watched hilarious videos on youtube but it was a good time all round.
Daniel's was on the Monday 6th of August, however we had his party the day before. Mostly we had his friends but a few of mine attended: mostly Katy, Andy and George. I wasn't drinking but all my mates, some of Daniel's, Daniel and mum got quite drunk, I gave Andy and Katy a lift home 'cos I was worried about them! It was a fun day and I got to see George, which I hadn't in a while, and a got a prezzie in a form of a bottle of Sake! Yay!
Andy is now back from Uni, but not without a few ups and downs.
He ended his first year uni with a blast, at his Summer Ball on the 16th June, unfortunetly this was the same day as my birthday. He was sweet to offer to spend my 19th with me, and even offered for me to come with him to his ball. However I was ill, and I wouldn't want Andy to miss his first end of year event. Plus his new band, Colt.44 were head linning. How cruel would I have been to say no?
His band seem to be progressing hugely and doing well. Their first EP has been recorded, (one song was written for me!) and he seems happy! He has had several gigs so far, I've only been able to attended one at the Rat and Parrot on Wednesday 15th, which didn't start till quite late so I feel quite tired and ill the next day, but I was glad that I was finally able to support him and he was over the moon I made the effort too. To hear Colt.44's stuff and to find out more info click here.
In addition, we've seen each other a few times, however since of my incident our time together hasn't been as I'd like it to be. We've had a few non-taxing dates, such as seeing the Simpsons movie, hanging out at his place and watching movies/playing video games. We celebrated our 2 and half year anniversary on 18th August, so yes despite our set backs I feel we are still holding hands and standing tall...which I know we will stay. We were meant to go on holiday at the end of June, but I had to cancel since I was not up for it, we plan to re-book it for the end of the year or early next year. So lots to look forward to despite our current situation!
Now for everyone's favourite bit, the review section!
This entry will mainly consist of movies, the two games I wish to review will hopefully be in my next entry (whenever that will be!)
I originally wasn't going to include the Studio Ghibli films I watched whilst I was ill, however "Tales of the Earthsea" is being released in cinemias on 4th August and thought it would be appropriate! To find out where it's showing and to view the trailer, see this main UK website: http://www.talesfromearthseamovie.co.uk/
Now onto the good stuff....
Shrek 3
Genre: Comedy
Rating: 4.5/5
Summery: The lovable orge is back, looking after things in the castle of Far Far Away when his father-in-law gets sick and eventually dies, he is now heir to the throne. Frightened of commitment and royalty, he does not hesiste to seek out the next heir and make him King. Else where, Prince Charming is plotting his revenge and Fiona is pregant!
Like most children and people who like to feed their inner-child, I highly rate the first 2 movies and gladly added them to my DVD collection. The 3rd installment, though not as sparkling with wide audience appeal like its predesors, is a pleasently surprise addition to the Shrek series. Admittadly after reading reviews, I was expecting it to be a disappointment, but I wasn't in the slightest. Most reviewers commented that most jokes were aimed at adults, but that fail to make an impression on me as the theatre I went to see it in was filled with kids and they all laughed the afternoon away like I did!
One of the things that I was quite grateful for was Justin Timberlake's performance, no I don't like the guy but I know other people do which is why I was afraid that he was going to take the spotlight and *shudders* get a singing part. Surprisingly, and quite pleasently, he didn't do any of that! His character, Arthur, was major in the story but he didn't out-shine Shrek, and showed good acting abilities. Ok some of his lines towards the end where cheesy but with comical quotes from the other characters it worked well.
![]() The Number 23
Genre: Thriller, Suspense
Rating: 2/5
Summery: Walter Sparrow is happly married with a son and a occupation as a dog catcher. His life is completely changed when he discovers a book written by a detective who slowly becomes consumed by the number 23 and kills his wife. When Sparrow begins to see numerous connections between the book and his own life, the number 23 begins to consume him too.
For originallity and creating a high level of interest in the concept and promos, they achieve 5 out of 5 stars, however this movie does fall short of all expectations I had. Jim Carrey is known for picking characters that are highly comcial, or are mentally unstable - somethimes a bit of both. I'm not the biggest fan of Jim Carrey, as his sense of humour is more "loud and slapstick", which I'm not into all (however I do approve of 'Liar, Liar' and 'Bruce Almighty'). But still his input wasn't my main cause of concern, the way the character slips into madness over the number 23 happens a bit too swiftly to be believable. The ending was different, as it doesn't have a cheerful ending like most films do. If you easily get depressed over films or are not into the dark side of theatre, then stay clear. If you're a thriller fanatic and have high standard you're more likely to be sadned by this, the bottom line - I do not recommend this.
Fragile
Genre: Thriller/Horror
Rating: 3.5/5
Summery: In a Children's Ward Hospital in the Isle of Wight, a string of unusual occarances are taking place when children start being deported to other hospitals. Noises are heard from the abornded 2nd floor and children's bones are breaking when no accident has occurded. The night nurse decided to take leave to figure it all out, her replacement, Amy, takes over the night shift when she becomes weary of the mysterious presence too...
If you're more into the obvious kind of fright, such as gruesome scenes and 'jumping out of dark corners', this isn't the movie for you. All the suspense elements are handled subtly and build up as the film progress. There are quite a few unexpected twists (a welcome edition to the horror genre) and the story progress' at a natural speed, rather than rushing to the 'scary' parts in fear of losing it's audience.
There are a few flaws, mainly involved with the ending that made this film fail to make a decent impression. One incident involving one of the characters dying, her thigh is punctured with a small metal pole amongst the rubble in the hospital; within a few minutes she is hanging onto her life by a small thread. If she was stabbed in the liver/stomach, or had her throat scrapped I would understand why she might not survive since major arteries are in those areas and you can bleed internally as well as externally. However in the movie she was shown to be merely bleeding lightly, trickling mostly, I did not find it believable and found the portrayal too dramatic.
Also a usual element of kissing was involved towards the end that not only looked awkward but felt strange watching it. I won't go into detail who was involved as it will spoil the ending, and the kiss wasn't meant to be a sexual thing, however the characters involved, the meaning behind it - although original - was odd and uncomfortable. If your goal in life is to watch every horror/thriller film out there or are looking for something out of the ordinary, give this a go. Don't expect it to be a oscar-winning performance but it's worth a hire and the time.
Kiki's Delivery Service
Genre: Anime
Rating: 4/5
Summery: Kiki is a 13 year old witch-in-training from a small town in the country, by tradition all witches must spend a year away from home as part of her training. With nothing but her broom and her black sarcastic cat, she sets off into the boi scary world. Her only ability is to fly, so she starts her own delivery service to make her way into the world. But of course not everything in Kiki's world runs smoothly.
This film is delightful and really worth a watch, the animation is bright and colourful, the story is light-hearted but keeps even the most serious film viewers interested throughout. Kirsten Dunst does the voice of little Kiki, which I barely recongised, but she did a bloody good job! I also love the sarcastic black cat, who kept me laughing throughout. The cast is filled with lovable characters, the art is beautiful, so it's a must see!
Whisper of the Heart
Genre: Anime, Romance
Rating: 4/5
Summery: Shizuku Tsukishama is a 14 year old girl who loves to read fantasy books and fairy tales, despite her parents wanting her to concentrate on her studies more. One day, she follows a chubby cat into the city and meets a boy, who at first teases her, but through both of their dreams they build a tender realtionship.
I found this movie particuarlly interesting, simply because it's a Studio Ghibli film, and they are more known for producing fantasy based films, however this is more down to Earth and heartfelt. Even though the story revolves around the 2 children and their developing relationship, it is not dramatised to the extreme (like orchestraded music and kissing on screen), instead its nice to see the two trying to presue their own personal goals and hope that their futures interwine. Very believable, heartfelt and really worth a watch!
The Little Norse Prince
Genre: Anime
Rating: 2.5/5
Summery: As a baby, Horus was saved by his father from their burning northern village, after the village was attacked by a powerful demon. Several years pass, and on his deathbed the father bids Horus to return to his people. Horus goes on a journey and quickly finds a village plagued by a monster. After slaying the monster, he one day finds, in another ruined village, a cute girl, singing in a heavenly voice. He brings the girl to his new home, but soon finds that there was a good reason for her being alone in the wasteland...
This film was made back in 1968; making the film, particually in the visual department, very dated. The movement of the characters where awkward to watch frequently and the sound wasn't particuallary music to my ears. However, the storyline is well presented, long, somewhat childish in areas but I like the themes protrayed. The film did not rate well when it was first released but it's considered a 'land mark' in anime history, as is known as a 'Pre-Studio Ghibli' classic (as Hayao Miyazaki, director of most Studio Ghibli films, worked on this). The movie does start off slow but picks up half way through, the voice acting is well done and though I haven't rated it highly above, it is worth a look, but recommended for hire before purchasing.
Well that's the review section done for the entry, remember you can view more in my previous blog entries and on my amazon profile too. I hope my entry wil have better reviews, but let's now move onto the song!
This entry's song, "Be Your Girl" is from an anime I recently finished watching and loved: Elfen Lied. I've already posted the opening theme up here in a previous entry, but this song is quite rock-ish, easy to listen to and catchy. I loved the anime and want to read the manga badly, it's not avaliable in English yet, but I recommend all anime fans to see Elfen Lied. Also, the singer of this song is a actress on Sailor Moon Live Action series (which I also loved!), she was only a minor character but still, gotta love multi-talented people.
Enjoy! Lyrics provided by animelyrics.tv

baby, I wanna be your girl baby, all I need is you This is me, over and out for god knows how long! Until then, thanks for reading! March 18 The Future Doesn't Scare Me At AllIt's a funny thing.
When you think back on your daily routine when asked "are you busy?"; if you don't go out everyday, don't have an 'action pack weekend' and your work routine is the same each day - you don't think you are busy.
Yet it's been over 2 months since I've updated this, and loads has happened! I hardly know where to begin!
I do apologise for the lack of update: I have kept a draft that I have been updating regularly but been reluctant to post it for various reasons. Such as not 100% satisfied with the writing quality or purely laziness - but enough delay!
First of all, I've changed my layout, at first it was a nice light purple toned theme but for some reason my blod wouldn't show up in that theme. After contacting MSN they said it was because either my blog was too heavy with colour/html codes or the theme is too much. I liked my blog so the theme has change to a much simpler one. Entitled: Sunset...I think...
Next: my job.
It's been nearly 2 months now since I've started my new pernament position; my days are longer (only by an hour or so), I'm now paid monthly instead of weekly and I earn slightly more than before. It doesn't seem that way because of the huge amount of tax taken off but on paper it looks like I do. I'm slightly happier overall at my position, sure I don't do as much research, editing or production based tasks - but I work for Mark Francis directly and we get along very well. We have a laugh, he's good mates with my father and he talks guitar with my brother Daniel so it's inevitable really!
I'm admin based now, which has been good for me in some ways. I now have regular work everyday instead of waiting around for the producers to give me stuff. I realise the importance of paper work where's before I wasn't interested in it. I'm good at what I do since I finish it quite quickly and to a good standard. Plus when I do get opportunities to do production work (such as research is my collague's ill/on holiday and when Wakey! Wakey! studio dates are due) I appriciate it more.
Such as in the beginning of February, we did filming for the first time for Action Stations! Usually the show is purely short links with CGI robots provided with voiceovers introducing the next cartoon. But for half term we decided to film children and in-corprate them into the links with them either saying a joke, or introducing the next cartoon. It was quite a good experience, the parents seem to like me, I didn't think I was as impressive with the children - but most of them were quite shy and I couldn't get much out of them. But Amy seemed happy so all good.
Although at times I feel I haven't quite found my place within the office/employment world yet. Of course I'm inexperienced and don't expect decent results straight away, but sometimes I look upon some of my collagues who I see struggle at finding another job, or their current one and wonder if I'll end up that way - or if I'm not cut out for television. I mean I wish to experienced other types of media such as radio, film and music production. But the world isn't in the same light as I saw it many years ago. Compared to others I was extremely lucky to have got into GMTV, let alone a job!
Also; due to my regular routine being repeativitve and knowing that I haven't really accomplish any of the goals I set myself 2 entries ago back in December: I feel a bit lost at times. Like I could be a better person, I see my faults in a clearler light, or sometimes feel like I'm meant for something else. I'm not sure what needs to be done to fill this void; I like my job, I try to be a good person and I'm experimenting in fields that I haven't done so before (such as cooking and independant traveling) so I think some investigation is required. Or some actual accomplishment of my new year goals needs to be done! I'll figure it out somehow!
It's all part of the learning curve of life I presume. Growing from a moany, stroppy, spotty teenager to a broke, stressed and wrinkly adult! Oh how I look forward to it so.
Right what's next to cover? My personal life?
Well let's see...
Back in January, Saturday 7th, I had a mini 'anime fest' with Hannah and Amanda; Katy was invited as well but the poor dear was ill at the time. We watched a few episodes of 'You're Under Arrest' - a wacky anime filled with female cops with big attitudes and always seem to get into chaos. We then watched the wonders of Sailor Moon: the live action series, which proved to be very popular amoungst us! With the acting, the style and the bad subtitles we had a right laugh. Hannah wanted to borrow the DVD but I'm too attached to it, so I lent her Elfen Lied for now.
I even got a quick glimse at one of Hannah's books: "Once Upon a Dyke". A small book with a collection of fairy tales warped for the lesbian mind. I read a few pages and it seems quite well written, I liked the art on the book too! *wink*
I caught up with Hannah and Amanda, plus Katy once more on Saturday 3rd March; we went to the cinema in Charlton to watch Hot Fuzz; the movie was mostly contained of slapstick humour and random elements on a strange yet familar with other story lines. Admittedly it had a few funny/quick witted lines in, and it wasn't as bad as I dreaded it to be - but I wouldn't see it again. The meal was then followed by a lovely meal at the Japanese/Chinese resturant next door.
It was unbelievable travelling on the bus to Charlton: to see my old neighbourhood in a different light, not just because it was sunny outside but much seemed to have changed. The streets we travelled were once the roads my family and I reguarly driven and walked on. Now they are a distant memory, and unfamiliar compared to what they once were.
I also saw Katy the Friday before as she came up to visit me for lunch at work; we went to a Japanese restaurant thats located behind Waterloo train station. They serve decent food at a good price and the service is fast - we had sake and exchange items that were either borrowed for a huge length of time (on her part) or CDs that were compiled for each other. So she had her first experienced of Japanese food with moi, and its fantastic to see her! I'm also planning to visit her next weekend at her university in Cantubury, to see what the big fuss is all about!
Andy offically returned from uni on Friday 11th February and left again on Saturday 24th. However in the little time we saw each we had much to celebrate.
First off was our first Valentine's Day on Wednesday 14th; he came round in the evening, turning up all smartly dressed with roses and a card. My gift to him was a home cooked meal, (lamb shanks droused in rosemary and sage, as well as potatoes and parsnips) served with rose wine and soft chocolate cupcakes for dessert! I also gave him a card and wore a very elegant (yet difinate of my figure) outfit that proved to be popular...the picture isn't geat quality but I'm wearing the corset from the christmas party, a skirt that came witht he outfit and a pair fo black high heeled peep-toed shoes. Wearing high heels for the first time did hurt a little, but they didn't look too bad though. Would wear again on a nice occassion if needed but not on a regular basis - it's not me!
![]() Next it was Andy's 21st birthday, which was on Friday 2nd February, but due to his schedule and money situation he was unable to come home that weekend. So instead he had a wild drunkern weekend in Devon and then had a separate bash in London with his loved ones. We went to Chiquitose - a tapas resturant in London, Travafalgar Square on Friday 16th February. Andy's family, some of his university mates, his friends from home and me attended. It was a nice atmosphere, the food was good and a big busty blonde woman served tichila shots to the customers - what more could a birthday boy want!
And last but not least; on Sunday 18th February was our 2 year anniversary. We celebrated the whole weekend; started off with a meal at Aberdeen Angus in London, which I have mixed views about. We arrived at 6pm and was already crowded, despite offered a seat outside in the cold we waited for a table and had a menu to look at while queuing. Despite deciding in advance, it took a while fo rthe waiter to take our orders and for the food to arrive. This was not much appriciated since the table we were seated at had very little arm and leg room, was down stairs and cramped. The food was decent but I would not recommended returning when it's that busy again.
Our meal was followed by a quick browse around the local mall, which included a mini arcade and several stalls that sold loads of Chinese goods (since it was Chinese New Year). Andy got me a bracelet with a dragon on it since I was born on the year of the dragon, and himself a tiger bracelet.
Afterwards we saw the wonderful Avenue Q; which was just as joyful and funny as the first time we saw it, most characterisation and commical acts were inputted by the performers themselves. And the only actor that had changed since our first viewing was the girl who played Christmas Eve. We absouletly loved it, and will not hesistate to go again and recommend others to see it.
He stayed the night at my house, we mainly chilled for most of the day till late - the only thing we did note worthy was booked our holiday! We're offically going to Zakynthos in the last week of June, our first holiday abroad! As of 10th March it has been fully paid off so we both can't wait till June. Well the first 3 months of this year have gone so quickly I don't think it'll be long till then anyways!
The Friday 23rd, his last day in town, I went round to his place after work - sure we just spent time together but we had such a laugh, I was still smiling and giggling after I had gone home (which is an approvement from before where I usually get depressed).
His 2 weeks at home did us both good, emotionally and mentally. The next time I see him will only be for a week after I return from Florida but it's good to know that dispite the distance we are still happy and solid. Yay us! Hehe!
The day after Andy's departure, Saturday 24th February, I had a surprise visit from George and Oliver!
Me and George originally texted each other the day before to arrange to meet up, we only went out for a quick bite to eat in the end but the nice surprise is that I saw Oli, who I haven't seen since summer. It was great to see them doing well and keeping healthy, my dad through a fit when he discovered Oli had been at our house (he's never met him but he's very against the whole 'goth' image and abusive language in public thing) but he's my friend and it's my house so his opinion doesn't really count in my world.
I think that's all covered in the update of my life - apart from the fact that I'm soon heading off to Florida for two weeks, I'm visiting Katy in Canturbury before that and I have new glasses! Quite snaazy ones too, however they are a little too heavy and put a lot of pressue on the top of my nose - therefore creating an unwanted mark.
Also; my mother has started a new home business, selling products for a company called “Herbalife”. A healthy food technology company and weight loss programme; more information about the company can be found here
Basically you replace the 2 smallest daily meals with a formula shake that gives you all the nutrients that your body needs and adds protein to stop hunger. They come in 6 different flavours. The only other thing that has occupied my life is, sadly to you but not to me, is my Playstation and the latest installment to the Final Fantasy series; Final Fantasy 12!!! I was planning to type up a review for the game right about now, but I wasn't happy with the quality of it. I haven't completed it yet due to getting home late from work recently, plus covering for a collagues whose on holiday at the moment. It was the review that was mainly the cause for the delay of this blog, so I'll paste it into a later entry when I can give an impressive and detailed review...
For now, I've decided to do mini reviews on certain TV programmes that have recently started airing or made a comeback to our television screens. Since I watch several series, hopefully one of the below may interest you...
![]() Title: Nip/Tuck
Genre: Drama
Channel: Sky One (Saturdays 10pm), Sky Three (Tuesdays 11pm)
Rating: 4/5
We live in a reality where beauty, and the money to create it, makes the world go round; and the two greatest plastic surgeons in Miami: Sean McNamara and Christian Troy are known for bringing perfection into many lives. They earn their living creating a race of picture perfect individuals; however not every customer has the same motives as everyone else. And beauty always comes with a price...
This is a very graphical series; every single surgry that is performed, you see in every detail - nothing is left unturned. And Christian Troy is known for a being a 'woman-isr' so many of his sexual activities are widely shown - making it the closest thing to pornagraphy without it being it. Though it's not something to watch over dinner; this series is full of plot twist, deeply dark untones and brillant characters. The script is wonderfully done, it's full of orignal storylines and well thought of quick witted lines thoughout.
Many well-known actors appear on this series and is not to be missed for those who like to see the darker and twsted side of reality.
The first three series are avaliable on DVD, while the 4th series is currently showing on Sky One.
![]() Title: Desperate Housewives
Genre: Drama, Comedy, Soap Opera?
Channel: E4, Channel 4
Rating: 4/5
Welcome to Wisteria Lane; where the most loving wives, devoted husbands, troublesome children and ill minded murderers gather for a wonderfully compsed series full of twist, turns and random elements that make this program so loveable.
Though the series focus' mainly on the housewives, many storylines involved attracted viewers of all shapes and sizes. All households within the series show a different family inside, allowing each viewer to recongise their own living situations within the programme.
The series is narrated by a housewive who commits suicide at the beginning of the first episode, and is the voice that follows the viewers through, and provides thoughful and deep speeches on life's lessons related to that episode at the end of it.
Though the series contains many random visitors (such as mass murders, mentally troubled indiviuals and paedophiles), and storylines that most likely never occur so frequently on one street in America. The series also highlights the troubles that families face in their everyday lives. Such as parents coping with their children having sex for the first time or a death of a loved one.
The first two seasons are avaliable on DVD while season 3 is currently airing on E4 and Channel 4.
![]() Title: Heroes
Genre: Drama, Science Fiction
Channel: Sci-Fi Channel
Rating: 5/5
Imagine being able to fly, teleport or freeze time; would you conisder it a gift ro a curse? Would it be used for good or evil or personal gain?
Twelve remarkable individuals discover that they have gifts beyond imagination, but unlike Superman and Wonderwoman - this isn't a comic book. They are alone in this world to face the evils that threaten to harm them, and the world as they know it.
This programme takes the superhero genre and elevates it into the next level; this series has a dark undertone that many comic book legends are have yet or afraid to explore. As each person discovers their powers not alone must they fight against the clock to save the world but their own demons, and everyone's powers comes with a price. Such as the artist in the series, who can see into the future - but can only do so when he's high on heroine...
Each character are from all parts of the world, and yet all connect together to create one fantastic and gripping series. All of them provide a different element into the story and protray multiple walks of life. Such as Claire Bennet; an American cheerleader who not only deals with her own teenage traumas but the near-death experiences her powers bring upon her. And the Japanese duo: Hiro Nakamura & Ando Masahashi, who bring in the comical elements into the series and make numberous references to Star Trek.
The first series is currently running on thee Sci-Fi channel, it can also be viewed on youtube.com apprently but I have yet to find it since many other series with the title "Heroes" in it from around the glode are posted on their too. If I ever find it I'll post it here.
![]() Title: Ugly Betty
Genre: Comedy, Drama
Channel: E4, Channel 4 (Friday 9pm)
Rating: 4/5
Betty is an attractive, intelligent, warm hearted and confident graduate who dreams of making a career in magazine business. When she is hired by the boss' father of MODE magazine (simply because he didn't want his son casually having sex with his secritary anymore), though she is dis-hearted by the more attractive yet bitchy collagues at America's top fashion magazine; she wins the hearts of many and works together with the newly employed boss: Daniel Meade.
At first glance at the promo for this programme: I wasn't so sure I would enjoy this series since I am not fashion fan. However though it and the magazine centers around fashion the series completely takes everything relating to fashion to the extreme that it takes the piss out of itself! The series has a colourful cast of characters, the scripts are heartful & smartly done, and it's also realistic.
Many programs related to such subject see a 'ugly' character come in, gets humiliated, says a great speech towards the end that makes all the fashion worships 'see the light' and decide not to be so wrapped up in it. This program doesn't do that, it sticks to it's guns and create a laugh while doing so. It's a lovely light-hearted programme that great to watch on a friday evening!
The frist series is currently broadcasting on E4/Channel 4.
Alright!
Now it's sing-a-long time!!
Right - I was at a complete loss to find a song that sort fo relates to anything I've just being typing up! The only thing I could find the link to or that I could legeally post on my site (and hopefully not stop playing abruptly like before) is this.
Yes, this is a Utada song, but it's a feel good song - the reason behind this choice is the sudden apperance of the beautiful sunshine recently - the sunshine seems to bring out smiles out fo everyone I see at the moment. Walking underneath the glorious sunlight brings out the best in most people I believe - its a welcoming feeling. This song is for the game Kingdom Hearts (the first one), and the lyrics and melody are very melow and heart warming. Here are the lyrics:

Album: Kingdom Hearts OST
Artist: Utada Hikaru
When you walk away
You don't hear me say please Oh baby, don't go Simple and clean is the way that you're making me feel tonight You're giving me too many things
Lately you're all I need You smiled at me and said, Don't get me wrong I love you But does that mean I have to meet your father? When we are older you'll understand What I meant when I said "No, I don't think life is quite that simple"
When you walk away You don't hear me say please Oh baby, don't go Simple and clean is the way that you're making me feel tonight It's hard to let it go The daily things that keep us all busy Are confusing me That's when you came to me and said, Wish I could prove I love you But does that mean I have to walk on water? When we are older you'll understand It's enough when I say so And maybe some things are that simple When you walk away You don't hear me say please Oh baby, don't go Simple and clean is the way that you're making me feel tonight It's hard to let it go Hold me Whatever lies beyond this morning Is a little later on Regardless of warnings the future doesn't scare me at all Nothing's like before When you walk away
You don't hear me say please Oh baby, don't go Simple and clean is the way that you're making me feel tonight It's hard to let it go Hold me
Whatever lies beyond this morning Is a little later on Regardless of warnings the future doesn't scare me at all Nothing's like before This is me, until I return from Florida, over and out, thanks for reading! January 06 A New JourneyHello All.
And Welcome to 2007!
I originally wanted to post this blog before the end of 2006, but tiredness and laziness got the better of me.
I hope everyone had a lovely Christmas Eve/Day/Boxing Day/New Years Eve/New Years Day...you know the drill! Did everyone got what they wanted from Father Christmas and get drunk on New Years?
This Christmas holiday was quite pleasent for me, it was nice finishing work and relaxing for a change, and seeing people without feeling the need to rush it, since they weren't returning to uni for a few weeks.
Did anyone find it difficult getting into the Christmas Spirit?
It seemed to be a common trait amongst my family and friends. Not sure whether it was just that mood of the year or events that had occured at the same time, but I didn't start to get that 'feeling' till pretty much Christmas Eve.
I mean I got stuck in christmas shopping madness traffic on the way to bluewater, I sent out and recieved Xmas cards, I put up the decorations in my house, I walked amously around shops for presents, I attended Xmas parties and dinners, I even wore bloody antlers - yet the spirit of christmas only graced it presence on Xmas eve whilst helping my mother make a home made lemon cheesecake from scratch (which was very nice!).
Whether it was the knowledge that Christmas Day was the following day, or that my loved ones were coming over, or simply just spending time with my family that got me all 'giggy' inside about opening presents the next day. Maybe it's age? Maybe it's work? Maybe it's just 2006 itself - who knows?
It was the same sort of situation on New Years actually.
I felt BUGGER ALL on New Years eve, I got invited to like 3 different events, and I barely made up my mind at the last minute. I didn't feel like it was approching 2007 at all. Is it just me?
Well I guess it doesn't matter anymore - I'm back at work now and occurding to my horoscope in the daily mail - big things are coming my way. Well actually it said that what I wish to complish for my future will be do-able this year...and the daily mail horoscopes have been freakishly right before. We'll just have to see!
This entry will mainly be a brief on my last week of 2007 and 2006 - but luckily I've included a few reviews of some of my presents further down so you shouldn't get too bored...
On Friday 22nd, I briefly met up with Katy at the Broadway to catch the bus to Bluewater (despite the christmas rush) and have a nice meal. We were delayed in meeting up due to her being late getting back from Bromely, and it was a nice meal at Amoy (a very nice chinese resturant in Bluewater) however I don't think I was much company. Sure we had our laughs as always, but she had a few worries on her mind that she confessed to, and wanted to say something that would make her feel better, but I don't think I did. I was quite tired that day so I don't think I was much company....oh well.
But I managed to see her additionally on 2 more occasions: New Years Eve/Day and 6th Jan for Sophie's (her sister's) birthday.
She invited me to a New Years party held by her friend Joe - who's 18th I attended last year (which was a blast) and he attended mine (which was better...haha!). To be honest it wasn't as lively as I expected, due to the fact that some people there I'm not fond of - and they're not fond of me as I heard afterwards that Dave kept calling me a Cunt which upsetted Katy. (But I was grateful that she stood up for me)
Also: a couple who had recently broken up before the party were present that evening; after alcohol consumption the upset male locked himself in the bathroom to cry and got plenty of attention from his female friends who tried to confort him. The other half was asked several times the reason of the break up and eventually both of them disappeared into the night before the 2007 countdown.
I found out on the saturday afterwards that after I left (12:15pm-ish) a gang chavs (who were friends of a boyfriend as a guest at the party) came in and practically ruined the evening. Taking the piss of goths and gingers, being rude, taking all the alcohol....I think you get the drill!
Sophie's birthday was a surprise invitation. Katy texted me the night before asking me to meet her at bluewater near tooties, without knowledge of why. But we had a nice meal, despite the poor paddy pez being ill, I had loads to eat which was quite surprising since I had a big breakfast before I attended - so I was quite chuffed with myself!
As I mentioned above I made a cheesecake on Christmas eve, mainly to prepare for Xmas day where we were planning on spending dinner at dad's house and thought it would be nice to bring something as a token of our appriciation. We also made a raspberry trifle, as well as prepared lots of food for our guests to arrive.
We held a small get-to-gether for mine, daniel's and mum's friends. Sadly for my bro and mum: mine only turned up. Andy, Katy and Hannah happily exchanged presents, ate our delicious food, drank our mulled wine and champagne and then bugger off to their own families at roughly 10pm. Dad, Miranda and the boys made their apprenance too as well as Andy's parents. It was a nice atmosphere and I think everyone had a good time.
What amazed me the most was that my 2 youngest brothers actually got on well with Andy!
When they all attended my birthday party, Robbie and Oliver were giving Andy the most flithest looks! I guess they weren't fond of this strange man holding and kissing their older sister....but on Xmas eve they played ball together and even called him by his name! (Which is a big accomplishment), they now refer to him as my boyfriend and even know how old he is (which Andy was touched by).
On Friday 29th, not much occurded but my mum's friend and collague Lynn spent some time with the Hughes family with a nice lunch at the Beefeater not too far from where I live.
Lynn's husband was the care-taker fo mum's school, and unfortunetly died of cancer fo the liver a few months ago. He was beloved by al the teachers and student of Barnes Cray school, and of course it's been hard for her. But Mum decided to treat her to lunch, it was quite pleasent considering that I had bad feelings of it beforehand - nothing towards her I just thought I wouldn' be much company since I didn't know her well. But we chatted, had wine, laughed and for invited round hers for dinner in the near future.
In the built up to Andy's leaving for uni again on Saturday 6th, we've been seeing each other quite frequently.
As well as his and his parent's company on Christmas Eve; we exchanged presents on Boxing Day round his place. I got him Family Guy Season 2, Prison Break Season 1, Lamb of God newest album, Nightmare Before Christmas Soundtrack (the special American addition) and a neon pub sign of the logo of his favourite band: Korn. Which he practically was amazed at, he hung it on his wall and put it on as soon as he opened it. I recieved Charmed Season 3 that day as well as white gold earrings and Princess Ai manga on Christmas day. I'm so glad he loved his presents since I considered him hard to get while trawling around bloody shopping centers and e-mailing countless times to amazon to make sure they arrived on time!
On Thursday 28th, despite Andy being a bit ill we paid a visit to our dear old friend by the name of Camden. We were only there a couple of hours, but we got several items for outselves - such as my military styled coat and Andy's chinese-y pyjamas. I also got a quick but pleasent visit from my dear friend George! He came round before he went to visit his mother for dinner to say hi and drop over a bottle of wine/Xmas card. His hair is getting long now! And it's good to see that he's well, since I don't chat to him online or via myspace anymore these days...glad to hear that him and Louise are still going strong too!
On the Saturday 30th; Andy came round mine for dinner and we went to the travel agency, we plan to go on holiday abroad for the first time in June/July period. We loved being in Center Parcs, but that was only a weekend break. This time we plan to go for a week, either in Spain or Greece. We've seen some lovely places, but can't really make a decision till Andy finds out when he finishes Uni for the year. Also that day we tested out Daniel's chocolate fountain! He recieved it as an Xmas present from mum, it wasn't as successful or as visually appealing as the diagram on the box, but the boys thought the chocolatty goodness was lovely when combined with doughnuts!
Thursday 4th had the regular visit to the Rat and Parrot: which wasn't as enjoyable as the Xmas party or previous visits. But it was cool, apart from one of the friends I made at the Xmas party didn't remember me....doh! Andy stayed for dinner too and played a bit of Goldeneye with my brother on the Nintendo 64 (yes we still have it!).
The night before Andy's departure; we met after work on Friday 5th at the Megabowl in Bexleyheath. Got lost on the way despite it being 5 minutes drive away from my place since I wasn't looking in the right direction - drove past Andy about 3 times! - but we had a quick game of bowling, which he won. Well he used to be the under-16s championship, and I only lost by 5 pins so really I can't complain! We then played air hockey (which I DID win - yay!) and then Mario Kart, which was colourful fun! Then head over for some bloody fun on House of Dead 4.
We then headed back to his place for some private time, I eventually left at half 10. It was easier to say goodbye this time round, helps with the knowledge that he's returning for his 21st birthday bash in 3 weeks time. I miss him already like crazy and I only saw him 24 hours ago...I'm silly I know!
Christmas Day was a great day, quite relaxing and made me spend more time with my family (including Dad's) than I have in a long time.
The morning typically consists of opening presents, however not-so-typically we all went to Brian's house for dinner. We brought along the cheesecake and a triffle for dessert (no one died after eating it so I presume it was a success). We exchanged more presents along with champagne, we eventually got a cab home.
I got some wonderful gifts on Xmas day, quite a few surprises and little gifts that I never would have thought of. From my mother I recieved some beautifully hand-crafted Japanese dolls called: Kokeshi. They are made from chestnut, cherry, dogwood and Keyaki. They are gorgeous and they have a nice place to call home within my bedroom.
The taller one is called: Tsujigahana, which is Japanese for Treasured Kimono, the smaller one is named: Nintai which means Patience. All of the dolls are named after the person who created them. They are from Gallery gifts, but these 2 are mine! Got it????!
My favourite present from my brother Daniel was my SHADOW THE HEDGEHOG PS2 CONTROLLER!!!
It was beautifully package in a red and black dome, the artwork on the controller is flawless, came with a little booklet and is actually smaller (controller and analog stick size wise) than a PS2 controller. Sort of felt like a Gamecube controller without the extra buttons. And I'm the only one allowed to use it!!! IT'S ALL MINE!!!!!!!
I got other lovely gifts too such as loads of DVD series such as Buffy, Angel, Charmed, Nightwish concert and Sailor Moon Live Action! Several books (manga), a CD and oriental sweeties amoungst the other chocolate that piling up in our kitchen...
Because I like wiriting reviews, I thought I would reviews on a few other items I recieved from my friends and family. Three items below only have mini reviews while the game I got from mum is much longer and detailed further down. I've written it this way 'cos...well....I wanted to! Ha!
Title: Death Note (Manga Vol.1)
Present From: Katy
Genre: Supernatural, Drama, Mystery
Rating: 5/5
Summery: Light Yagami is a brilliant, but bored, high school student who undergoes a drastic change when he discovers a mysterious notebook, known as the "Death Note", lying on the ground in the year 2003. The Death Note's instructions claim that, if a human's name is written within it, that person shall die. Light is initially skeptical of the Death Note's authenticity, believing it is just a prank. However, after experimenting with it and killing two criminals, Light is forced to admit the Death Note is real. After meeting with the true owner of the Death Note, a Shinigami named Ryuk, Light seeks to become "the God of the new world" by passing his judgement on criminals. However his actions are soon been chased by the police, the FBI and a mysterious man by the name of 'L'.
More Info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_note
Katy made a big deal out of this series a few months ago while she was at uni, I wasn’t so sure what it was about but after the first few pages I was hooked!
When you read an manga book or watch an anime that has 'smart' characters in them, you don't tend to see their potential - or they don't get opportunities to shine since the common trait for main characters is naiveness, lack of intelligence and/or high popularity. However Light is EXTREMELY well presented in this series, all the plans that he comes up with to use the death note, to hide it, to lure the police or to throw them off the scent of him being a suspect are amazing! Everthing is explained throughourly and nothing is left in shadow.
It's also interesing to see how slowly Light begins to show signs of madness; the action of ridding the world of evil people sounds like a good deed but in another light it's wrong to murder. Light at first seems innocent and pure in his actions but then eventually begins to show signs of corruption, and the mysterious 'L' shows his own kind of intelligence that matches Light's.
The art is very different to what I normally view and wonderfully done, the characters are very believable and the storyline is 100% gripping. No ‘anime’ or ‘manga’ fan should call themselves that until they have fest their eyes on this!
If you are unconvinced of it’s cult following, there is currently an anime series, a novel, several computer games and 2 live action movies (3rd in production) based upon this masterpiece…
Title: Princess Ai (Manga Vol.1) Summery: A mysterious beautiful blonde girl falls to Tokyo with no memory of her past or where she belongs. All she has is her name and her heart shaped box, fate intervenes when she meets Kent – a handsome student who provides her shelter, and eventually ends up with a recording contract after performing at Club Cupid. However while trying to uncover her lost memories – evil forces are set on disposing her for good… The manga is co-created by Courtney Love: from hearing that info you’re most likely to feel a shiver down your back…and not in a good way. It’s the kind of manga you wish to hate, but it’s not bad.
Sure it’s not perfect; there are a few kinks in the story, such as the main character: Ai discovering her memories a little bit too rapidly to be believable. And her name is Ai, and she’s from Ai-Land….? If I started going around saying I’m from Sarah-Land, people would think I’m on speed or something.
But the art work is beautifully done, Ai’s costumes are to die for (I WANT THEM!!!) and music fans will see a few resemblances to Nirvana such as Ai’s heart shaped box and her love interest: Kent looks very much like Courtney’s late husband: Kurt Cobain. There are a few humorous moments, lovely lyrics provided within the text and it’s a respectable manga.
There are 3 volumes in total, and it’s being made into a live action movie…so they must have done something right! It’s one to check out.

I watched the first DVD about 6 months ago and was very impressed by it, and got bored of waiting for Katy to buy the 2nd dvd so I asked for it for christmas.
The anime starts of with a simple format and detectives trying to solve the mystery of a young lad terrorising innocents, however half way through you begin to realise there are far more layers to the story and other forces are in play. Reminds me of Evangelon in a way: the first half of the series reflects as a young boy saving the world from evil forces with his giant robot, however deep levels of psychology jump in and opens so many doors and raises loads of questions.
The first 4 episodes tell 4 different stories of people who are connected to lil slugger in some way; the story opens up with a character designer named Tsukiko Sagi, then moves onto an young achool boy, then a woman suffering from identity disorder and then a detective. Paranoia Agent reaches many levels and types of people in the world.
I have not watched the entire series but from what I've seen so far and the synopsis I've read on the internet - It's only going to get better!
And now it's time for the BIG one.......
Title: The Legend of Spyro: A New Beginning
Platform: DS, GBA, PS2, Xbox & Gamecube
Featuring: Eiljah Wood, David Spade, Cree Summer and Gary Oldman
Genre: Action, Platform
Rating: 3.5/5
Spyro is no ordinary dragon: he may breath fire and be leathal, but how many dragons do you know that are purple and can't fly (well)?
The story of Spyro began on the first playstation, introduced as a game suitable for young ages. The game had a simple concept of collecting mindless numbers of jewels, rescuing dragons and defeating enemies that were more of a laugh than a threat. As well as multiple colourful levels with different styles of gameplay (including time trials, flying and bosses), cheerful catchy music and puzzle solving. He warmed the hearts of children and thoses who long for the simple side of gaming, and is a family favourite with many homes including my own.
Since 1998 Spyro has grown and developed from the PS1, to the PS2, the gameboy and eventually other consoles such as the Xbox. With a total of 6 games in the series so far, (as well as several cross-over games) most of them contained the same child-like sustance and repeatitive game play.
But 2006 saw Spyro in a new light - though the game was originally advertise as the prequal to the original PS1 game, Spyro's life and history has been reborn from scratch into a new world of gaming...with mixed results...
The story begins inside a dragon temple, destroyed by a mysterious evil force who has broken into it to destory all the newly born dragon eggs. However a dragon named Ignitus escapes with the last one and rests it upon a river, hoping it'll float to safety. From the egg hatches Spyro, who eventually grows up in the home of the dragonflys alongside his 'brother' - Sparx. Several years later, after discovering that he himself is not a dragonfly, he decides to set out to find the secrets of his past. Only to find that an evil female black dragon by the name of Cynder is planning to bring the destruction of the world...
From the brief synopsis above you can guess that the game itself is slightly darker than the rest of the series: the nature of the characters, the music and the enemies you face contribute to the 'darken' state of the story. Putting the idea that Spyro as a 'purple dragon' is destined to go great things and save the dragon race. Though it is not always a bad thing to try something different or alter an old character to modernise it, the whole 'chosen one' genre is very overused these days. In games, movies, television and books; it's the idea that first puts the most serious gamers off this title at first. However it does have more to offer.
Unlike the previous games, 'The Legend of Spyro' adds more action based gameplay to the storyline. The previous games mostly had Spyro only capable of charging and breathing flames upon his victims. However the latest game evolves Spyro's powers and allows the player to be more creative in battle.
Spyro can now mulipulate the 4 elements: fire, ice, electricity and earth; all with their own special affects and advantages. He is also able to use melee attacks (both air bourne and grounded) in order to perform combos to inflict heavy damage upon the monsters found within the game.
Each 'element' has it own special attack (as well as the standard breath attack) which is activated by the appropriate button. For example; if Spyro is using fire, he can shoot a bomb that explodes upon contact and deals damage to those who are within range. While electricity creates a cage that hovers the enemy into the air - making them vunerable to Spyro's air melee attacks whilst they are still being electricuted.
Within the pause menu you are also able to 'upgrade' each attack to increase it's power and it's attack range, making bosses and common enemies much easier to vanquish.
The biggest addition combat wise is Spyro new 'Fury' attack. Activiated when Spyro's fury bar is full, it unleashes a devastating attack that deals damage to all surrounding enemies within range.
From the start of the Spyro series: jewels have remain a essential part of this gaming series. Though lying around and not necessary to building up Spyro as a character, they served as a currency at times and means to moving onto the next stage of the game. And were important if the player wished to complete the Spyro game 100%.
The jewels return in his latest game but are alterted in importancy: they are categorised into 4 groups, separated in colour and what purpose they serve. The red jewels helped recover Spyro's health bar (found at the top left hand corner), the green jewels served as 'mana' (in RPG terms) allowing Spyro to consistantly use his elemental powers as long as green bar was full (found under the health bar). The purple jewels fill up Spyro's fury bar and the blue jewels serve as 'experience' - allowing Spyro to upgrade his powers via the pause menu. Since Spyro's history has been redone from scratch, many of the lovable characters (such as Gnasty Gnorc, Hunter and Ripto) are no longer part of Spyro's legacy. The only character other that remains consistant throughout the Spyro series is Sprax - the purple dragon's faithful dragonfly compainion.
In the previous games, Sparx had no voice (apart from a high pitched squeak) and played a slightly bigger part than he now has in the latest Spyro addition. He was capable of pointing Spyro towards valuable treasure (using the right button combo), collecting nearby jewels, and eventually - by the 3rd Spyro game - got his own levels and powers. He also played as a 'health' meter to Spyro, when he was gold Spyro was at full health. As Spyro loses health: Sparx changes colour until he vanishes.
However even though in this game he gains a voice, a personality and quick-wit: he no longers plays a vital part in the main gameplay. Though he helps Spyro by pointing towards his next destination: he is no more than the donkey is to Shrek. He provides the comedy in the storyline, provided sarcasm, pointing out the obvious and pretty much saying what most players would say in that particular situation. He has his good moments and provides a laugh at the darkest moments of the game, it's a shame though that some of his old elements were not kept in the new addition.
Another common ground this game shares with its precedsors is the repeatitive gameplay.
Though their are 6 different environments to explore: they are all basically the same format (walk, kill, walk, kill) apart from one or two simple puzzles to divide them from each other. The enemies are the same throughout the game, the 'monkey' like monsters simply change colour and grow stronger as you progress during the game. However with the upgrades of breaths they do become very easily to elimenate, as do the bosses too. This can grow tiresome as the same 'monkey sounds' are made when injured or killed, making me want to press mute quite oftenly. Since the music is more atmospheric than comical or noticable, not alot sound wise is to be credited for.
Despite the upgrades and variations of combat: there are many situations where Spyro is severally out numbered, making the newest of game players feel heavy handed. Though death can be common at first, there's infinite lifes and continues. However the lack of saving opportunities can lead to players growing frustrated before they reached the next saving point in order to spare them going through the aggrivation once again.
There were also little kinks that were easily fixable or avoidable: yet ignored.
Such as the swift change into cut scenes during battle: just as you finish certain battles you are immeditatly taken into the next part of the world and unable to return to collect any left over jewels or finish off the enemies you left behind. A simple fade out after the last enemy is destroyed would be more smoother rather than a slap-bang into the cut scene.
Also; when talking, Spyro constantly using his 'claws' (or his front legs) during his speech patterns and using them as humans use their hands whilst talking. I found this slightly irritating and out of character as a dragon. Elijah Wood performed well as Spyro and the facial features were enough to empathise the emotions of Spyro - hand gestures were uneeded and looked careless.
The game's life span is extremely short and not much re-play factor is involved compared to its precesors. No extras or unlockables are avaliable, you cannot return to previously visited levels and the game could've easily been padded out with more levels. Such as 'flying' in between worlds, and hidden missions within the other worlds. Its such a shame since the graphics were top notch, the surroundings of each world are beautiful protrayed, the powers are presented nicely and when compared to the other games in size - this game doesn't hold a candle.
If you are a long lover of Spyro & his repeatiitve gaming ways, and refuse to see a darker, more combat style to him - then gives game a miss. If you are looking for a more intense hard-core action and violence game - this ain't for you neither.
However if you are willing to experiment a new side to Spyro or wish to try something a little different compared to your current game collection - it wouldn't hurt to hire this out and give it a go!
Before I introduce this blog's theme song, I apologise for the song for my previous entry 'Billy Mack' to cut out suddenly. (It worked at first, must of changed the orignal link).
Orignally I was planning to paste a song form the Live Action series of Sailor Moon - it would've been a very chirpy japanese pop track, but I decided against it eventually.
Now I've got up a song composition from a track of the original soundtrack of a game from the Sega Genesis: Phantasy Star 3.
The album: Segarock Volume 1 was released in Japan in 2004. It contained many classic tracks from the Sega Genesis games and remixed them with a very cool guitar players. It's quite up tempo and think it kicks off 2007 quite well.
If you wish to know more about the game it originally comes from then explore my review entry here.

This is me, facing the start of 2007, over and out. X December 22 Tis the SeasonWell.
The weather is getting colder, gloves and scarves are coming out, online shops are filled with orders, the homes are light up with multicoloured lights, London's streets are barely walkable with too many buzzing shoppers and many bank accounts are suffering by the minute - that's right it's christmas rearing it's jolly head again. And it's come quite quickly too, and thankfully for that I have finished work for the year! |
